Research question for Barry
« on: September 03, 2006 - 06:57:46 AM »
Barry,

I am searching for a 70 Challenger  my father used to own- he ordered it new in 70.
My mother and I do not have the VIN number anymore, but we do have a lot of the details.
We know where the car was purchased. We have the name of the dealer - no longer in business Outside of White Plains, NY ( I can find the name if it helps)
We know window of the time that he ordered it. We have it narrowed down to 2-3 months We think he ordered it in Sept and rec'd it in Oct.
I know most of the options he had, including the color.
We know that he had Allstate insurance company and that  the car was registered. NY, Connecticut.
Usually most states don't have complete records prior to 82.
We know what year he sold it -1978, but not to who or where.

I know a few of the codes:

JH23G0B.........
FJ5 - Sublime
v7x- Black vinyl roof
318, 2barrel carb, slapshift auto - Round knob
Flat hood
Fender mont turn signals
Black interior, high buckects, vinyl
base option Hubcaps
Steering wheel - 3 spoke std black/woodgrain
AM/FM radio

Is it possible to track down the VIN  based upon any of this info?
What would be th ebest way to find out where this car is?

Thanks in advance,

Dan

Hey Dan,
Without a complete VIN number it would be next to impossible. You mentioned Allstate though, most insurance companies keep client records. So, you might check with the agency your dad used and see if they still have the VIN filed away.

Any letters he recieved from them for policy renewal would have the VIN on them too. Any boxes of old letters in the attic?

If you can find the VIN I can take a look and see if I have the car on file.

Best of luck!

Barry

Every once in a while someone gets lucky......

Two summers ago a guy contacted me about a T/A he used to own. He had the VIN from old insurance records. I had not heard of the car before, so I started a file on it. Just two weeks later the owner registered the car! I put him in touch with the prior owner and they had a very nice visit and the prior owner got a ride in his old car.

They lived less than 10 minutes away from each other, pretty cool.

Best of luck finding a record of the VIN!
