4.30's not so great.
« on: August 17, 2006 - 04:51:31 PM »
i'm posting this topic for a friend who has a 73 cuda 318/904 that previously had 3.23's sure-grip. in hopes of making the car a little snapier.  well after test driving it, the gears make the car snapier but way too snappy. also shakes and howles to beat hell.  we knew what we getting and knew the consiquenses. but found it wasn't worth the money spent.  maybe in a full on drag car but not a weekend toy.  he got the 4.30's at a very resonable price from a local racer.  so just a little FYI for everyone maybe 3.91 or 3.73 would have been perfect but we got in too deep.  we didn't know what the outcome would be. so this is just our opinion on these gears.  since now we have a 4.30's pumpkin laying around.
thanks

I run 3.91s in my barracuda, its daily driven. Pretty fun but not over the edge. Rain can make things interesting fast  :grinyes:. When i put my 360 in, i might just be looking fora 4.30 set for the track  :2thumbs: :burnout: over 4.10 is a little much for a mainly street car. .02cents

I have 4.30's in my Challenger. You don't want to drive on the interstate that is for sure!!!!
You have to make sure that your driveshaft/u-joints are all up to par. If your driveshaft is bent at all with the pinion gear turning so fast you will get vibrations and howling noises . :burnout:

What ever problems you have with 3.23s, are still there with 4.10s, 5.88s, what ever. Teh gear makes no difference in how the rest of the parts work. All kinds of vibration are the result of what Tact said. Pinion angle being off, (does the car have air shocks or saggy originals) Ujoint or shaft/slip yoke/rear yoke issues will be exasperated by the shaft turning faster with lower (numerically higher) gearing.

I had 4.30's in my Charger and that is not for me, I'd run out of gear on the track.  A really tall tire helps cut the gear.
Goody you can run a smaller dia. tire to act like more gear, but you sacrifice some foot print size. But if you get a really good slick in the 25" size you will get a better time probably.
I'm debating between 3.55's and 3.73's for a street driven auto 440.  I have to get new tires so I'll be able to play around with the effect of tire size and gear ratio.

4.56's here. Not daily driven, but it gets around on the weekends :cooldancing:

I have a 29.5" tall rear tires that help that out a little though. The bad vibs your getting could be the u-joints. Try reseating them and making sure everything in back togather the way it should be.

I find 3.23's close to the limit for highway cruising at 60 mph with 275R60's.  I'm getting about 2500 rpm.  I think that 3.55's may be the best all-round ratio with limited highway.  The 3.91's I had made for slow highway cruising (50 mph) at reasonable rpms and you better hope that your exhaust system isn't droning.  Of course, OD changes everything.

3:55 is the way to go for a street driven small block
