whats in your,,,,,,,,,,,hood
« on: August 29, 2006 - 05:15:14 PM »
Well it wasnt the Capital One pillaging vikings but at some point in history mice decided to use the hood  as a storage facility. Maybe about a hundred acorn shells and some wierd fuzzy stuff.  Silly rodents. Then to top it off, I find all these pinholes under one of the scoops. :1zhelp: With out cutting it out and refabbing new metal who has some ideas as how to make this repair :1zhelp: :clueless:  I think if I try to plug these holes with spot weld I'll be making more work for myself, Maybe glass strand filler?   Anyone

Well ... I wouldn't (hopefully) try to weld them.  Likely the metal is too thin.

If to be a driver, I'd strip the paint and rust-kill it.  Then seal, bondo, sand it.  Then prime/paint it.  The insert will hide it anyway, correct?

For small holes like that, here is what I do;

Blast to bare metal - Both sides.

Brush on POR-15 - Both sides.

Once the first coat is dry, mask the underside of the hood covering all pinholes.

Apply second coat of POR-15 from top only with panel laid flat, the tape will keep the paint from dripping through the holes. Apply additional paint coats as needed.

The paint dries hard, I have covered holes up to 1/8" this way and the rust has not come back.

 :iagree:

If that's all you need to do (if you are lucky ...), get the POR-15 trial kit.  It includes little bottles of the Metal-Prep, latex gloves, etc., and will be far more than you need.  Relatively cheap too -- around $15 plus S&H.

Buy directly from POR-15.  It's shelf life is not great.  So far, I'm very happy with the stuff, except for the cost.  Just used a bunch on my rear frame rails and over-axle cross member.

Grind the acorn shells to a fine powder, mix with a bit of the mouse poo and water and apply to the holes.  Wait for it to dry and then sand it smooth.  The mice spent years collecting those so you know it will last and anyway, they were just trying to help. :grinno:
