Paint
« on: September 01, 2006 - 07:26:08 AM »
Looking at determining what and how to paint my 70 Challenger (though I am at least two years away).  The original was a single stage paint if I am not mistaken (enamal?).  I am thinking of going base coat/clear coat.  The car is EF8.  My gut tells me the BC/CC will make that color pop out a little more.  Any thoughts?

:grinyes: Base / clear will make the colors POP much better. They didn't have the high tech paints we have today. The Plum Crazy purple I just shot shines GREAT and I haven't color sanded and buffed yet.  :2thumbs: But it aint CHEAP!!  :money:

Try here --- www.ppgcarpaint.com/home.php    They were very helpfull

I'm a painter by trade and I reccomend base coat clear coat. The price is alot higher for good quality paint like PPG,DUPONT,GLASURIT,SIKKENS but it is worth it.If properly preped and applied it will last you a long time.My paint job on my Charger R/T is 16 years old and it stil looks like it was painted yesterday. It is also alot easier to take car of clear than color. On single stage paint job the Uv rays attack the pigments in the color and start to oxidise the paint.A clear coat is protection from UV rays for your color. If you have any questions email me at berna4406@yahoo.com

I would go BC/CC and if the you can afford it first have two coats of clear applied, wet sanded and then two more, wet sanded and buffed. It will really add depth and will look excellent.

Thanks.  I am convinced on going BC/CC for the next projects.  And yes, I will only use PPG.  One of my best friends from high school is a PPG rep so I can sometimes get a price break.  I am worried about doing this job myself since its a metallic paint.  I plan on practicing a bit, then shooting the underside, door jambs, engine bay and trunk before tackeling the outer shell.  Of course, I am a year or two away from that.
