exhaust for 318 a-body

i want to go with a 2 inch exhaust for my 318,but i'm not sure what a good muffler would be. i could care less for sound, jus performance-glasspacks got the apocalypse-like noise, but do they have the performance to back it up?

Sounds like maybe the "Purple Hornies" or something like that is what you maybe after  ???  I looked at Summit Racing, but the smallest that I found right off the bat, is 2.5" so.....

Two inch? Wasn't stock 2 1/4"? Anyway, i run 3" with optional 3" cutouts on my 318. Its a little much for it, but when i drop my 360 in, i wont have to think twice about reworking the exhaust. I run Flowmaster Super 40s...but i rarely cork the cutouts  :lol:

Prob had 1 7/8" stock w a Y-pipe to boot!

Maybe a flowmaster 50 has perf w/less sound but nice when you get on it!

I would run 2 - 2 1/4 " duals on a 318

If it has manifolds, they are 2".

If you have headers, Chryco is right, 2 1/4"

The best way to get a good sound, is run smaller pipe, to the muffler, and bigger pipe out the other end.
(ex, 2" to X pipe, 2" X pipe, to 2 1/2" mufflers, 2 1/2" out of mufflers)
X pipes sound neat. Seems no one here even knows what a X pipe is, and everyone comments on how my trucks sound.

Walker turbo's sound nice, and are cheap. I have some on my 95 ram, nice muffler for the price.
Magnaflow's are my new favorite, I really like the sound, like a mellow glasspack, but they dont blow out.
Flowmasters sound funny to me. (and, despite the name, really don't flow)
Areochambers are my tried and true performance muffler, sound great, and better with some header!

Glasspacks are good performing mufflers, no doubt about it, but the noise they make after they have some miles, is awfull. Kinda like that laboring old Dodge power winnabago you hear, with the JC whitney one size fits all glasspack dual exhaust sound.
Horrible. Just horrible.

with headers i would run hooker aerochambers I have a pair on my duster and really like em. its a bit loud inside, but outside its pretty quiet till i hit the secondairy or it hits 3g

Horrible. Just horrible.

The best sound, from what I've heard is straight pipes, no crossover.... My '69 Charger R/T with 440 had this from the previous owner.... Sounded real nice, even after I put the 509 cam, and then some on it :smokin:. Anyway, H pipe is the next step up, still maintain good sound, but pick up some power, b/c of the crossover being able to equalize the exhaust pressures between the different sides. Then there's the X pipe, still got sound, but it's supposed to be the best setup for performance (when using an exhaust setup) because it crosses both banks of exhuast into each other, most certainly equalizing the pressure.... Now, once again, Charger had staight pipes.... Not sure what muff's. My old International truck, major exhaust leak (pipe rusted infront of the muffler), but is in store for dual 2 1/2" exhuast, with H pipe and Flowmaster 50 series..... Just need to finish getting the rest of the pipes later on.... Duster, what do u think? With no motor, no tran's, well, lets say it's ultra quiet, lol. Aspen, doesn't run, but it's a single setup...

ok, screw the mufflers, i'm willing to go straight pipes jus to shut those ricers up. but wat about the x-pipe? for the simple fact that it reduces back pressure, i want it, but wil it make the car even louder? i dont want to go too loud for street legality reasons, not too many cops will tolorate the thunder

Get headers, and cut them out. Straight manifolds through a x/h pipe to the back of the car will sound a little  :eek4:. If your gonna go open, go cutouts and after the header collectors. just imo.
