Dana 44 question

Would a Dana 44 be strong enough to run behind a (mildly hot) 340? I only ask because I had the opportunity to buy one pretty cheap and I need something to replace the 7 1/4 the car came with originally.

it would seem so , a version of the 44 was used in the Viper , what is it out of ??

Close, but no Dana there. That's the  8 3/4. It will live forever behind most 340s, depending on driving style, ujoints and tires. The B body will bolt in, but you need to move the leaf springs in 1" per side to do it. The brackets are easily available.

C.P. - the 44 was out of a jeep. I know it would have to be retubed + new axles etc I just wanted to know that if I do eventually go that road it will hold together. If they handle the power a viper puts out I don't think I have any worries!

Carl - Yeah I have seen that case. Money is unfortunatly really tight at the moment as we are saving for a house so I'll have to pass

if you are going to retube & get axles get a Dana 60 from a ford 3/4 ton

Is it cheaper to retube etc. than to get an 8 3/4?  I know you have to deal with shipping costs.

the 8 3/4 should be the cheapest route but if you are spending the $$ to retube do a Dana 60
