Anybody know of a good decal adhesive remover?
« on: September 21, 2006 - 09:15:32 AM »
I'm pulling the 33-year old strobe stripes off my Challenger.

Hit them with the heat gun and pulled the vinyl off. Tons of adhesive left behind.

There looks to be a ton of products out there... anyone have any experience with a particular product that worked well?

Goo-Gone and WD-40, my usual tools for this kind of thing, did absolutely nothing.

Thanks in advance.

P.S. If Chrysler really tried hard, I bet they could have come up with a stripe design that was an even bigger pain in the a$$ to take off. :-)

I've had some good luck with acrylic solvent. It's nasty stuff, so if you use it have a breather and don't get it on anything.

On paint you want to use a citric acid base adhisive removed.  Sign supply companies have it in stock and it is designed to be used on vehicle paint.  You will know you have the right stuff when it smells like oranges and costs about $30 a gal.  Just look up sign suppliers in the phone book and call one of them.
The funniest thing about this particular signature is that by the time you realize it doesn't say anything it's to late to stop reading it.

go to a local auto store and buy a couple vinyl erasers. Works beautifully. Was shocked at how easy it worked.

If everything else fails, Go to a body shop supplies place and ask for a 3m adhesive removal pad. It goes in a die grinder and softly buffs off the glue and picks it up.  It's like rubbing it off with your thumb but lots faster. It's usually used for the thick,  emblem-double sided foam tape that takes forever to get off.

Grec,

I am a sign shop owner and we use the stuff Cody mentioned.  It is a citrus based solvent and it just dissolves the adhesive away.  Another product that might be easier to get is 3M adhesive remover 6040.  It is about $7.00 a can.  Works just a well and you can probably pick it up locally in an auto parts store or paint supply.
