Chromabase over acrylic enamel?
« on: September 21, 2006 - 07:50:13 AM »
Its been a while since I have posted progress on my car so I thought would present my latest dilemma. I got the car back from the paint shop last month and my fender looks great. The paint matches very well and it looks very good. They did not however, paint the inside fender rail under the hood.

Last week I pulled the hood and prepped both fender rails and sprayed the basecoat/clearcoat system on them. They look so good and glossy that it now makes the rest of the engine bed look dull. Well I cant have that you know. Last nite I started pulling all the firewall and fender well components as I want to repaint the engine bed.

I sprayed the engine bed with an acrylic enamel one step system. Are there any issues with sanding, priming, and applying the Dupont Chromabase and clearcoat system over the acrylic enamel? I also have to do the underside of the hood as well.

I am no paint expert and am still learning... but from what I have been told you should have not problem scuffing and shooting BC/CC over the original single stage paint, as long as the paint is completely setup...but I think you are supposed to shoot a primer or sealer prior to the BC and to help ensure good inter-coat adhesion.

Was the original single stage Dupont? If so, you should be able to get a definitive answer from you local paint dealer.
Please post the results... I will be going to paint in the next couple of months.

Depends on the color....and yours is purple? BC/CC will "build" color with multiple applications. I would shoot a sealer, such as reduced DP50LF, over the original enamel. Actually, you should probably use a sealer of the same color that was used under your exterior paint. Using a sealer will do two things: first, reduce the likelihood of bleedthrough of anything under the sealer and eliminate compatability problems. Two, provide a uniform substrate on top of which to lay BC color.

Cool - the paint I was going over was the same plum crazy purple that I am shooting in Chromabase.

I cleaned and scuffed it and shot a test and it did great. Late last night I shot the engine bed and now it really pops!  It didnt look right next to the glossy fender rails but now it all flows. It was a little work but well worthe the finished product

Thanks for the advice
