Rear Brakes
« on: August 10, 2006 - 10:11:57 PM »
 :canada:
I have head that for rear disc setups one can use a rear brake setup from a late 90s early 2000s Ford Explorer. Can anyone verify this? and if you can please advise if the parts are a straight swap or is there some custom work involved?

the only thing common in size is the wheel lug pattern 5x4.5 , everything else would be custom
70 Cuda, 7.0L Gen-III Hemi, Viper T56 w/9310 gearset, 3.91's, Megasquirt MS3x v3.57, Innovate wideband, Firm Feel upper arms, torsion bars, springs and strut rods, QA1 DA shocks. I did everything on this car except the fancy paint stuff and I drive it...and I can't seem to stop messing with it....

Dr. Dif on moparts.com has a kit that does this.  I think you have to change the axle ends where the backing plates would go.

you will definatly have to remove the axles & the drum brake backing plates & mount some kind of caliper adapter in its place

I don't know what it will take but I saw a TV auto show & some late model Ford truck with rear disk brakes also had a small drum just for the emergency brake.

ChrisII - to answer your question. I was informed by my painter/body guy that the Explorer would work for the rear discs setup. It would be to fit on a standard Chrysler 8-3/4 rear end. I am currently chasing two pre 70 Ford Dana 60s for my challener. Hopefully one is "posi" suregrip as that will be the old tough powerlock unit. But I will also look into this Explorer brake thing as I am going to install the ends off a Chrysler diff housing and run the standard axles and bearings. Just by fate I have kept some old truck axles with the bearing retainers around so I can do this. I will post the results to this site but won't be able to confirm for a month or so. Sigh - another winter passes before I can get her on the road.

Have an idea for you guys, Working on my 98 Caravan I discovered the bolt pattern is the same as my '73 chally, 4.5" . My van does not have rear disks but I know that they were available. Wonder if those hats would fit. If so an adapter could be made for the caliper and there ya go.
Also same bolt pattern for my 98 GT.   :bigshades:

Here's an option for you.  http://www.speedwaymotors.com/xq/aspx/paging.yes/dept_id.351/display_id.1999/qx/Product.htm  Speedway is the nation's oldest speed shop in the nation and has a lot of neat stuff.  I have been eyeballin' this kit for some time because it looks so easy.  Uses Wilwood style rotors and hats and gm calipers with parking brake.  Just an idea.
