What for exhaust .... 340 with headers
« on: November 04, 2006 - 11:02:55 PM »
Need  some  thoughts  on exhaust....headers have 3"  collector and  I've  come  down  to 2.5" with a reducer cone. Was going to run  2.5 throughout with a turbo  muffler ( Cherry Bomb or Dynomax) to tips  in rear valance  and  a 'H' pipe  . Was  in a muffler shop  to get estimate  to do it  and  he  suggested 2"  tail pipes  to  maintain  back  pressure ? and  then  they would  fit the 'stock' exhaust  tips  I have  since  they are 2" also . this  would  save me  modifying the tips  to open them  to 2.5". I  believe stock  pipes  were 2" from  the mainfold.  Suggestions? anybody  using  a Cherry Bomb  turbo.....how's  the sound?.....thx......

generally 2 1/4 " is ideal for most small blocks unless they are stroked or running higher RPM then I woudl use 2.5 "
 2" is to small IMO

"Backpressure", it means restricting the exhaust flood, yes?
I must confess to know very little about the benefits of backpressure.

Can anyone tell me what good this backpressure does, and why there's a lot of hotrods, gassers, dragsters, and so on, who happily races nearly without an exhaust system, and does'nt seem to mind the lack of backpressure?

When muffler producers such as just Cherry Bomb makes mufflers which they claim will reduce the backpressure, my confusion is complete.

I thought that the spent gases was useless for the engine, and should get away as fast as possible, instead of loitering around in the headers/manifoilds?

:iagree:

Choose a muffler that is NOT a straight thru design because you need a little back pressure for a street motor.

Back pressure is a MYTH you do not want backpressure at all But by using exhaust that is too large you loose Velocity , with high velocity the exhuast leaving creases & large vacuum behind it this helps to draw in fuel into the cylinder during the brief period when both valves are open at the same time , it has been proven that good scavenging / velocity is more effective than the piston is at starting to draw in air / fuel
there is a fine balance between using to small exhaust & becoming restrictive & using too large & loosing too much velocity inside the system , this also depends on where you operate the engine RPM wise most of the time , no system will be effective at all RPM all the time , it`s always a compromise & there will be 1 spot where it wil work perfectly ... hopefully close to where you operate the engine Most of the time

Ok  sounds  like  then  I  need to run  2.25"  pipe,  since  with the manifold i'm  running it  works  in the 1000 - 5500 RPM  range  per Edelbrock info. the  exhaust  tips  I  have  are approx. 1 7/8" I.D.  Should  I  cut out the supplied short tube and  weld  in  a 2.25   or  will it make  any noticeable  difference  .....I  could  reduce the 2.25 slightly  to fit over the existing tube?  any  thoughts  on this, since  these are 'stock' repro tips  then were stock  tailpipes actually  2.0" ?........this  site  is a real life  saver ,  thx  everyone.

I would open up the tips as well , it doesn`t make much sense to put a plug at the end of the exhaust
