340 Casting Number Help & A833
« on: October 31, 2006 - 12:30:51 AM »

Needing some numbers decoded for me please.
This 340ci engine is currently in a 1971 Cuda and as far as I know it's not the original engine.

Drivers side - HM-340R - 36730074 (Hamtramck low compression 340 (R = Regular gas) But what does the 8 digit number mean? I was thinking the 3 = 73? and it was the 74th engine off the assembly plant that day?)

Drivers side - 27809-30-340/6 (It means a 1968-73 LA 340, correct? So, what does the 340/6 mean, can't be SIXPAK being low compression or?)

Passengers side - 6-30-70 (This is the 30th of June 1970, right? If so, why is it a low compression engine? Did they make low compression 340's in 1970?)

4-Speed Numbers - PP-833-3581-002 and below that 99129H (I have no idea, can't find it in any of my books)

These are the numbers from a friends 'Cuda. I asked him to double check his numbers and he seems to think they are exactly what is on the drivetrain pieces. Thanks for any help or input into the matter.

HM-340R - 36730074 =

H - Series (1972 Model year)
M- Mound Road (engine assembly plant)
340 - 340 CID
R - Regular fuel
3673 - 10,000 day calendar final engine assembly date (August 18, 1971) 1972 model year.
0074 74th engine assembled at Mound Road on the dtae above.

2780930-340/6 - The 340 is the CID and the 6 is the core revision number, so this block mold had been altered six times by the time this engine was cast.

6-30-70 (This is the 30th of June 1970, right? - Yes.

If so, why is it a low compression engine? - Because it was assembled in the 1972 model year.

Did they make low compression 340's in 1970? - No, but some 1970 castings were assembled well after the blocks were cast like this one.
