Hi all! Any thoughts on Barracudas used for Navy Recruiting?
« on: October 29, 2006 - 01:38:05 PM »
New to these boards but not new to Mopars or ebodies.  I've owned this Sno-white/Blue '71 Barracuda Convertible since 1981.  I bought this car from an ex-navy guy who explained to me that the Navy League and a local dealer had sponsored the car.   It was given blue stripes and graphics that included "FLY NAVY" on the side and I believe the seals of the Navy League & the Navy. The car was driven to college campuses by pilots for several months in 1971 and it was then sold to pay back the sponsors.  The guy I bought it from removed the stripes shortly after he bought the car.   He said there were other cars in this program but I don't know if they were Barracudas or where they were located.  When I mentioned this car's history to another enthusiast he said that he had read an article in a (Mopar?) magazine about a similar car.   I also saw a car for sale at Muscle Car Finders http://musclecarfinders.com/1971cudaconvertible5.aspx
that describes a car as being a "Navy Special". They didn't respond to my email for info.  If anyone has any thoughts I like to hear it?  I include a photo of the real car and also a guess as to what it might have looked like in 1971
I'd love to find a period photo of this car.  Thanks!

I do recall seeing a car like that on the Dupont Registry. A friend of mine retired from the Navy after serving from 1972 thru 2002, with the later years doing recruitment work for the Navy. Let me ask him if he knows anything about this.

I appreciate that!  This car was at Sandpoint Naval Airstation in Seattle.  They closed the place down about 1972 and moved to Whidbey Island.   I tried the local chapter of the Navy League and they put my inquiry into their newsletter but no results.  One navy pilot I knew asked around but didn't come up with anything.   Someone must have taken a photo of it back in the day.
