Epoxy primer question (from a moron)
« on: November 04, 2006 - 04:03:04 PM »
Hey,

I am using PPGs shopline epoxy primer on my fury. JP375 primer and JH3770 hardener.

I shot my hood last night and either due to haste, or stupidity, or the beer I mixed the primer with my medium reducer and left out the hardener all together.

So I noticed things were a little gummy this morning. I can wet sand the stuff fine but dry sanding or DA turns it to gum.

My question is what to do now. Considering wet sanding works fine, can I wet sand the primer only coat now and add another hardened coat on top of this?

Or, do I have to stip the whole damned hood and start over.... and if I do have to strip it...how would you recommend I do it? I cant DA without the stuff clogging the paper.

Thanks a million!

No pro here, but I had some problems with stuff setting, sometimes it would set, just took a few days, other times it stayed gummy, then I took it all off, probably paint stripper or solvent at this point.(if it didn't set solvent works fine & is a little less harsh then the stripper)
oh yea is this on bare metal, if there's a coat under it & that set, the solvent would probably just remove the gummy stuff, which is a plus. Rich.

You are going to have to remove it.With out the activater the primer is not going to link up. Try this, get some DX440 wax and grease remover. This is a strong cleaner and will sometimes remove soft products. If that won't work you should be able to remove it with a strong solvent like DT 885

Thanks guys,

I got the hood stripped today. A couple gallons of laquer thinner did the trick.

I just feel bad that I have to re-do everything :) :) man I had that hood laser straight..

Ohh well, I guess it's one of those things you'll only do once. Maybe it's a sign to stop drinking so much while doing body work.  :angelwings:

Thank you again for the assistance.

One last question... do I need to prep the bare metal with anything before I spray this epoxy primer? There is no surface rust on the hood. There are a couple tiny corrosion spots from finger prints but beyond that the car is very very clean. just wondering.

Thanks agian for everything... I dont know what I'd do without this board.....probably shoot gummy primer all over the place and get pissed I guess.

Sorry I'm not up on that line of epoxy.I would clean the steel with a metal cleaner/conditioner and use dx1691 before spraying the epoxy. You may want to check PPG's p sheet for this.
