Are truck engines the same as car engines?
« on: November 07, 2006 - 10:39:33 AM »
A friend of mine has an old dodge truck with a 440 in it, that he said he'll let me have for cheap. I haven't gone over to take a look at it yet, and I don't know what year it is, so I was wondering if there is any difference between Dodge car engines and truck engines. Are truck engines stamped HP? Would a truck engine have heavier internals, like a 6-pack engine?

A GM friend of mine says that sometimes Chevy truck engines were "tall deck", and the pistons had additional rings.

I was just wondering if there are similar differences in Dodge engines, and if there is something I should look for, or stay away from when I go to look at the engine and decide if I want it.

only the motor home engines had some differences in the large chassis , a pick up would have a car engine in it ,& no they didn`t have 6 pack bottom ends

Sorry to butt in...

but Chryco, would that mean that motor home engines need more mods to put into a car rather than a pick up engine?  What's the difference? Are they now a good candidate to swap? Thanks!

I have a 77 (78? I forget..) motorhome 440 in my Challenger.    I put it in myself and I got the motor as a longblock right out of a motorhome with 15Kmiles on it.

The only mods I had to make was put '70 sheet metal, motormounts, brackets, dipstick and waterpump(and housing) on it.   and that all bolted on like it should.

I did put in a different camshaft in it, but I doubt that was necessary to make the car run.    The waterpump that was on the motor originallyflows backwards compared our Challengers.
