Parking Lights and wipers?!?
« on: November 10, 2006 - 12:10:34 AM »
Hey there,

Ok now it's winter in Finland and the Challenger is standing in the garage waiting for the spring.

Can anbody tell me if the parkinglights only should be lit only when parking lights are switched on, or if they also should be lit when headlights are switched on?

My second question:
My wipers aren't working as they should do... they only have one speed and stop where ever when I turn them off (don't go down)
The speed is also accordingly to the revs in the motor...?!?  :clueless:
The switch I have inside the car for the wipers have 4 positions (0-1-2-3) the only time the wipers move is when I have it in the first position ( that will be in 1)

Have you any cluess/suggestions what my problem could be.

Thank you again for a great site with great members.

BRegs,
Jek

The only answer I know is that the speed of the wipers depend on you rev's because the voltage regulator allows more voltage when the engine is above idle, thus allowing the wipers to be faster.

Also the parking lights should always be on whenever you have the lights on.

Ok, thanks guys, I probablly have something wrong connected in my car then, because they are not on with the headlamps!

So it is like this on all challengers, wiper faster with mor revs, I thought something was broken a condensator or something?

Anybody else got some ideas with my wiper problem?

Jek,   The wiper speed should not vary noticeably with rpm. At one time I had a similar issue with lights dimming at idle but was able to resolve by burnishing the wiring contacts at the alternator, voltage regulator, engine to body ground strap & the battery to body ground. I imagine something like this could solve your problem, probably some high resistance connections, maybe low output from the alternator, maybe issues with the wiper motor itself. Do any other electrical devices exhibit similar problems?

Hey,

I don't think my lights dim at low rpm, I'm not sure just got the car.
The only other electrical thing I can think of doing this, is the electrical fuel pump, but it should do that, shouldn't it?

Are you running a stock alternator?

Sorry about the confusion, I was talking to bullitt99.  That's interesting.

Are you running the stock voltage regulator and what rpm does you engine idle at?

The current alternator is  stock but from an A/C car which I think is a little higher amperage but I have had this car since '75 and the only electrical issues I described above. The original voltage regulator has been replace a few times by whatever was available at the parts houses, currently an off brand from Oreilly that I'm sure is a more modern design than the OE. The car is very stock and the spec. idle I believe is 750rpm.

Ok interesting, I may have to look in to the regulator from Oreilly.
Thanks for the info.

Check the voltage getting to your wiper motor and at the wiper switch, there should be no difference. These are supply & demand issues, if some other electrical device is taking too much power or the connections are not efficient you may be loosing power somewhere along the way.

I will have to do that one of these days.  I have all of the originaly wiring so I do not like the idea of have to replace it unless something is broke.  Not much electrical on it: ignition, lights, wipers, A/C fan that I never use, and the radio which is new but low watts.
