Turn signal catch or detent
« on: April 14, 2007 - 03:12:21 PM »
Took the challey out today for the first time since Nov.. For some reason when I put the turn signal up to turn right it doesn't catch or slip into its detent . It just goes up and stops. The signal works but I have to hold it up then release it. It worked fine when I parked it last Nov..  :clueless: HELP!!!

They have a little plastic piece inside that is prone to breakage. It is part of the turn signal swith. You have to pull the wheel off and the crush can, then you will see what is wrong.

Dave,

I agree with the above diagnosis. If your's is original, it has probably dry rotted and broke. Have fun getting that crush can off.  :pullinghair:

I agree too, it's probably the switch. If you decide to replace the whole thing be careful what you buy. A vendor at the Nat's told me the one he had was for my '70 but the plug was totally wrong and I only noticed it when I got home. The gizmo on the left is a tool I made to remove the crush can, like Mike said they aren't fun to take off and most pullers don't fit inside the can.

I had to change mine cause the brake lights would not work.  :scared:

Bad turn signal switch will also do that.  :pullinghair:

I just installed the same turn signal switch on my 73 Challenger as above because my turn signal wouldn't catch.  (The small 10.95 piece.)  It was working before I did this, just didn't catch. Now, neither turn signal works.  The hazard lights come up, but no turn signal at all.  I checked the fuses and none are bad.  Could I have fried something else down the line?

I just purchased a TW7, it's got 2 wiring harnesses coming off of it. One has 7 terminals, which correspond to the wiring diagram for my '70. The other has 3 terminals.. what are they for? I know it's a mopar unit to be used in an assortment of vehicles. I'm just curious what they're for.

Otherwise, i bought the sears steeringwheel puller kit, moved the cross piece to one end of the puller, stuck it in the can, then put the bolts in one at a time. It takes a little working, but you don't have to pry or force. It will fit.
Drive it like you stole it.

got the lights working, though the right hand signal doesn't catch even though the plastic isn't broken.  Turns out the contacts were just a hair too long and were digging into the plastic when you activate the lever.  I trimmed them up and I have turn signals again.  At least thats one more thing off the list.
