Gear Swap
« on: December 22, 2006 - 04:01:33 PM »
I'm looking at swapping from 3.23s to 3.91s in my 8.75. Neither my Dad or I have ever took a center section apart. Just swapped them out. It is a 742 case with a clutch sure-grip. How difficult is it to swap? Is this something I should get a proffesional to do? I'm looking at gettign a dynamic convertor when I get the money after I swap gears.

just swapping the center section is easy , put the car on stands undo the wheels , then undo the axle retainers 5 bolts each side & slide the axles out , undo the drive shaft , undo the 10 bolts holding the carrier in , use a jack to break the seal between the housing & C section , lift down the C section clean the housing I use the Fel Pro gasket & Ultra Black silicone to reseal it reverse the proceedure , while you are in there pack some grease into the axle brgs , they have no other source for lubrication  , on 1 axle retainer on the passenger side you will find a lock tab  leave this off , hit the passenger side axle with a heavy hammer to seat the left axle into the brg & make sure there is a tiny amount of end play .008- .018 , adjust the threaded coller to set end play & install the lock tab to hold the adjustment , Add synthetic gear oil
this can be done in 1 hour or less

I know how to change the center section. I just never have swapped gears in a center section. Thanks though!

it was not clear what you were asking in the question , you need a press & special measureing tools to set pinion depth , best left ot a pro

Ask the truck guys aroud you who does their rears. Most palces have a following because not too many guys do them well in most areas. I would leave it to a pro, and replace everything but the carrier and case if the Sure Grip is tight.
