73 'Cuda Numbers ?
« on: December 07, 2006 - 07:26:51 AM »
When I got this car the seller said it was a #'s motor.I have a build sheet. It's hard to make out.    213718530623?62? BS23H3B373459. I checked what I could-It's a 73' 340 block.  Cast #'s 2780930-340-1       The block stampings get very faint  3M 340 0223909  is as close as I can see.  No fender tag.  I believe the car to be from Mich. Isn't the stamping the sequence #? I'd just like to know before I get rough with her. I'll prob. pull it to save it if it is. It is now a 4 speed,I talked to a previous owner who has the #'s auto. Would it be worth it to try and get it? Shipping would kill me! I'd have to leave the 4 speed,I like it!!

you have a '73-340 Cuda...it was built in Michigan(Hamtramack)

...the engine/vin number should be stamped on a small pad on the passenger side of the block just above the oil pan...it should probably read 3B373459....that number would also be on the trans....make the guy show you the # before purchase...

 :iagree:

The number you found "3M 340 0223909 " is the engine serial number, (most of it anyway) not the VIN. Look where Larry mentioned for the VIN on the block.

Best of luck!

Thank you, I have checked those numbers. They are:3B378378.   Not 3B373459.   So this is not THE block? mayby a warranty?             When I replaced the valve covers I found 360 cast on the heads.  ANY feedback?

Warranty blocks do not have VIN numbers on them, so the engine is out of another car. The 360 casting was used on 340s and 360s, but the 340 heads had the larger valves installed. I am not sure if this is true for 1973 though, you may have to ask about it in the "engine" section.

3 - Last digit of model year, 1973

B - Hamtramck, MI assembly plant.

The next three is part of the sequential VIN, there would have been 100,000 cars that year with the 3B 3 from 300000 to 399999, so yes, it is pretty common.

T/Ake care,
