Bed liner removal ?
« on: November 27, 2006 - 11:14:48 PM »
Anyone have any ideas on how to strip bedliner material out of a trunk? I have no idea why it's in there as the car has no rust at all but I don't like the looks of it. sanding would take an oh my god amount of work buy I don't know if theres any other way.

When I bought my Chally someone had sprayed looked like undercoating in my trunk. I sent mine to the body shop and had them grind it out. I don't know why it was done to mine either. No rust. :swear:

That was done at the factory, you can thank that ugly stuff for no rust in a lot of cases.

From the factory?  you mean just on the 1/4 panels don't you? this car has it on the floor and tail light area too.

Inner fenderwells and inside rear quarters from factory. Underside of car also if it came with the full undercoating option.

The stuff of the trunk floor and tailights had to have happened later.  :22yikes:

Try soaking it with paint thinner and then scraping it off. No smoking or open flames though, and wear rubber gloves! Paint thinner can soak into your skin and cause nerve damage.

If it is a quality bedcoat like Rhino-lining or Speed-liner the best way to remove it would be a power wire brush. This would be the safest for the panel and the person doing it. If it is one of the low quality coatings for the DIYer you may be able to remove it with paint stripper. I would try a 3" electric grinder with a cupped wire brush, this is how we remove it to do bed repair with a bed coating. Remember to use safety glasses and a dust mask or respirator.

so what you're saying is there is no easy way, I think it is the cheap stuff so it that might help. I thought about the wire brush but I figured it would just get hot and smear.  thanks

When we stripped the underside of the cuda... take a small propane torch and heat the area up, it should get spongy. Take a putty knife to it and it should peel off a lot easier. It worked for us since most media bouces off of it.

I've used it in my cars, but the cheap sprau can stuff thats thin... wouldn't want to mess with the thick better stuff.  Sounds like a mess no matter how you remove it!
