Indy EZ Head or Edelbrock Victor Head
« on: December 04, 2006 - 02:38:48 PM »
I just talked to hughes engines and something dont make sense?
I have also talked to Modern Cylinder head as well...an Indy

Hughes is telling me that the BB Victor head will make more power than the EZ head???
Now modern has emailed me there flow sheet and at .600 lift with 4.380 bore the CNC 295 head with max wedge ports will flow 346cfm.
Hughes has an ad in Mopar Muscle claiming 370cfm with standard 440 ports? doesnt say what lift or bore size?
Thats 24cfm more than the max wedge EZ head which is about a 50HP difference...
Hughes havent told me or emailed me any flow sheets/bore size or lift yet?
But one thing that really dont make sense is Hughes said in the email that max wedge porting will have little or no affect???

How are they getting more CFM of flow without max wedge ports?
I guess Modern Cylinder Head an Indy dont know what their doing or talking about.....yea right!
Has anyone dealt with hughes before?

To compare apples to apples, both/all of the heads in question need to be flowed at the same inches of vacuum. Higher test vacuum equals higher flow, and vice versa. I suspect (since you didn't mention it) that Hughes and Indy/Modern were using different vacuum values.

I friend here locally also said he got more flow out of the victor than the small indy - 1 heads by raising the roof of the port
 Not a Hughes fan though

Hughes is playing salesman. Jeff's head programs are head and shoulders above anything hughes puts out for that money. Especially on a stroker buildup, the max port will way outflow std port opening heads. And sometimes "fast small ports" are too fast, and dont make as much power. Especially on a bigger inch engine. The Victors are Edelbrock's challenge to the -1 Indys. They should prove to be a good head for the money IMO and AFAIK do not need the external oil lines like the "Frankensteinish" Indy offerings. As far as flow testing, truthfully, to be apples to aples, the same guy needs to flow each head, on teh same bench, on the same day. Otherwise the numbers are hard to compare. Hughes numbers have always been inflated. As have Indy's claims. Jeff at Modern is usually pretty close (say within 5-10cfm) to others' readings when things are tested on different benches by different guys. That's about as good as you will get in terms of flowbench readings. I will always tkae a dim veiw of Hughes or Indy's calimed cfm sheets. results dont lie. They inflate their numbers.

Also not a Hughes fan. -Dave Hughes ported our Indy SR heads and it took 3 months to get them back... :swear: Once we bolted them on the blue smoke poured out the exhaust. They ported right through the heads and oil was coming into the chambers on the heads. We ended up getting another set of heads and taking them elswhere to get ported. :villagers:
