I just looked at Mapquest, and I am 7 hours from you.  :pullinghair: I truly believe you have a carb. problem. It is running rich. Maybe a case of smaller jets, or maybe the float is set too high. If this has set for a while, the gas could be stale too. You could have a clogged fuel filter too if rust has developed in the tank.

Hey Mike.  The fuel is new as I have have had the tank off  and everything. New filter, new vapor seperator, new fuel pump, etc.  The previous owner had the tank unhooked and was using a garden sprayer to supply fuel to the carb as he had an electric fuel pump on it with holes in the tank. I wonder if the pressure from the sprayer had anything to do with maybe screwing up the carb.  I have about determined I need a new carb anyway.  Just deciding between the 750 or 600.

David, getting a carb. to transition from idle to partial throttle is one of the most difficult things to do. There are several adjustments that must be correct and a new carb. will require that these be made. Here is Edelbrocks tune up link

Summitt carries the rebuild kit as well as many tuning accessories for the Edelbrock Performer

Thanks Wade.  The Auto Zone said they didn't sell the kits. I will review all the information you posted and go from there.  Don't know how much work I will get done over the holidays.!!!Thanks again.  Merry Christmas and Happy New Year too.  David

If you have a NAPA auto parts store, try a #2-5457 kit , it's a NAPA/ECHLIN kit...approx. $28.00...

Removed the carb today.  Took it apart and checked the floal levels.  Supposed to be 7/16" from the gasket in raised position .  Was about 3/4".  Float drop supposed to be 1 1/4".  Was at least 2".  So I adjusted and cleaned and make sure all the tubes, nooks and crannies were open. Put it back together and will try tomorrow and see how she does.  I really don't want to spend $258.00 on something I may not need.

Rained off and on most of the day.  Without windows in the car I really didn't want to start it , get it outside and then have a problem.  So It didn't get started today.  Now its back to work and getting home at 5:00.  Really too late to do much.  Guess I will find out this weekend if it does't rain again.   David

Got home a little early today. Was about 60 degrees and thought I would take a chance and start old Christine.(thats what my neighbor calls her).  Anyway after a few turns and filling up the float chambers again, she fired.  Had to work the choke a little bit to get her warmed up some.  Started a soso idle so I pulled her out of the garage.,( didn't want to stink up the house again). Warmed up some more and drove it down the drive and down the road a short piece.  I am trying the transmission out also.  Even at idle ( a little fast) the trany shifts from park to drive or reverse  with a pretty good jolt.  Not a smooth engage like I am used to with an automatic. Anyway...Still a hesitation from idle to acceleration, and still same problem of stalling out if you goose it and then turn up the drive to head back to the garage.  Tell me how much should the 2 idle screws be  turned out to start the idle setup.  I have them about 1 1/2 to 2 turns and have tried to adjust the throttle linkage to idle around 1000 rpm.  Not very good.  Still considering a new carb.............. :violin:

Have you read thru the Edelbrock link above? I think 2 turns would be a good starting point but adjustments are needed
IDLE MIXTURE

The Edelbrock Performer Series carburetor has conventional Idle Mixture Screws (IMS) that provide a leaner A/F when turned clockwise and richer A/F when turned counter clockwise. The idle air flow is controlled by a conventional screw that opens the Primary Throttles. The following procedure should be used to set the idle mixture and speeds.
1. Fully warm engine and ensure choke is fully open.

2. Air cleaner in place.

3. Set desired speed with the air screw.

4. Adjust the IMS on ONE side to get the maximum possible RPM. Do not go rich beyond the maximum speed point.

5. If the above changed the idle speed more than 40 RPM, then readjust the speed.

6. Adjust the side OPPOSITE of that in Step 4 to get maximum RPM.

7. Reset the speed.

8. Carefully trim each IMS to again get the maximum idle RPM.

9. Go leaner just enough to get a 20 RPM drop in speed.

10. Reset the speed to the desired RPM.

11. This is a Lean-Best Idle Set. Setting richer than this will not improve idle quality or performance, but could tend to foul plugs

Here is a great article that explains the idle circuit. After having rebuilt or tuned dozens of carbs I still learned a lot from this.

Thanks Wade.  That is a lot of info. I already parked her for tonight.   I will read thur the link and go from there.  I still feel the engine is good, no valve problems, no blue smoke at all, no missing on any cylinders that I can tell.  So I really think it is a fuel delivery problem.  thanks, I will be back!!!!

Read some of the tuning...The pump calibration says that to move the pump linkage closer to the carb body. It is already there which may be a problem..Too much fuel when I hit the gas.  I will move the linkage out one hole at a time and see if that does anything different.  One day I will hit the correct combination.  One day!!
