Rechrome mirrors or buy repops?
« on: December 02, 2006 - 11:30:47 PM »
If you rechrome the '70 race style mirrors don't you have to pull the control knob assembly off the cable to remove it from the housing?  which will probably ruin the mirror unless there's a trick to it?  I destroyed an AMC one trying to get the cable out and the chrome shop says they want me to take it apart . I've heard a few questionable things about the outfit in Canada who makes and sells the repops but has anyone delt with them lately and what do you think of their mirrors?  I'd rather rechrome mine but if I'm going to ruin them I might as well buy new ones and save the originals, they don't look that bad.

I can't comment on the repops, as I haven't heard of anyone that has bought them yet. You have it right about rechroming the old ones. You have to remove the cable and glass from the mirrors before you send them out. The cost of rechroming will probably run in the area of $150-$175 a side, so they are slightly cheaper than the repops. From experience I have removed a cable from the side mirror for rechroming, and it just wasn't the same after that as far as being able to adjust it from the inside. The movement was limited. Maybe others have been more successful than I?  :dunno:

When I had my mirrors re-chromed early this year, I also had to remove everything from the mirror housing. Just have to be careful removing the cables from the remote mirror control. Actually, once I got the mirrors back and re-assembled, the remote control worked better than before.  ( Probably because it was hooked up the way it was supposed to be . Guy I bought it from didn't bother to drill a hole in the re-pop door panels, so I didn't  know that the driver side mirror even had a remote! He just installed the mirror, left the cables dangling inside the door for me to find when I removed the mirrors. Always used to wonder why the mirror wobbled around when I was driving. Now I know!)

IMO - re-chrome the originals. Repops are cheap.. jest turn them over at a car show & you'll know exactly what I mean.

They are a little lighter metal that's true, unless you're wacking stuff with your mirrors I don't see the harm though.  the chrome is as good or better than most rechrome work I've seen.

Ain't nothing wrong with the repros I purchased. Got mine off eBay. Maybe there's more than one company selling them? They look good and too me, the same if not better than the shoddy DC mirrors that got slapped on.
