VIN Plate Restoration--1970 Cuda
« on: December 21, 2006 - 06:26:24 PM »
I have a 1970 440-6 Cuda that's missing the VIN plate on the dash.  Anybody know who makes new, restored plates?  (It's a re-creation so I'm not worried about the original plate).

Thanks!

If it is gone, it is gone.

It is against Federal law to make, buy, sell or posess a counterfit VIN plate.

You can get a new state issued VIN though, contact your local DMV or law enforement agency to see what is required.

you CAN get a legal new vin plate made. talk to julius steur at restorations by julius (web site is http://www.rbyj.com) - he gets $2 per minute, 5 minute minimum for answering questions.  he got me one for a 70 cuda convertible i bought from him.  he did all the work, and it took awhile, but it eventually got here. the process involves going thru the police to make sure its legit, and it could be just a california thing for all i know.

But...was he replacing the vin plate with the correct vin number or a number from a different car? There's a big difference legally.

It appears from his statement "It's a re-creation so I'm not worried about the original plate" that he wants to have a tag that makes his car something it is not, sorry Green Mopar Guy, but that's my opinion.
I agree with Barry, that is against the law.  :2thumbs:

:clueless:  Not sure if he wants a replacement for the original tag or one made up for a 440-6 car - big difference there.

If it's a re-creation why not just get someone to make you a [CUDA - 440-6BBL] plate?
Do it custom......sounds a little dodgy, not you, just the process.

For all we know you could be making it and selling it off to some poor mug claiming it as a real 440-6.
Most guys wouldn't even check the block and body stamps to double check.

Make sure you do your legal homework & get it done right.

I may have misunderstood your original question. If you're trying to create a new vin number altogether, then you're probably going to go to prison at some point no matter what state you live in. If you're trying to create a vin plate with a vin number from a different car that no longer exists, you may still go to prison. But, if you're creating a new vin plate to replace the missing original vin plate using the original vin number then I seriously doubt that you would get into trouble for that as long as you have documentation such as a clear title in your name. If your state considers replacing the missing vin plate with the correct number vin plate a crime then I suggest you move to a better state.  ;D

Without a broadcast sheet or window sticker there are certain numbers needed to make a correct tag. How he did this without knowing the cars full information is unclear. Even if he went through the police the tag still wont be legitimately correct. Even with all the info myself and Barry have on E-Bodies from 70 thru 74 we cant layout tags without having the correct paperwork or documnetation. Id be curious to here how he does this.
Dont forget to register your AAR at the AAR Registry only at www.transamcuda.com 1981 AAR's on file. Also info on 70 thru 74 E-Bodies. Ask me about yours!!
