Anybody ever ship/receive a motor (383) and has any suggestions?

If I were to have someone ship me a basically complete 383 (minus exhaust manifolds - unfortunately), does anybody have any suggestions on how to do this or carriers to use, approximate weight and shipping size (I can measure/guestimate this but if you know it great).

I haven't done that yet as I always thought it would be expensive.  Usually just made sure I bought engines close enough to me to pick up myself.

Yeah, I have that hope too but if it isn't close enough I'm getting prepared.

We ship engines often so I'll wing this off the top of my head. Weight on a pallet shop be around the 600lbs range. Class 85. Shipping to or from a residence is MUCH more expensive than  business to business!!!! Plus this would go frieghtline (18 wheeler) You need a way to get it on and off the truck.Just like in FED-EX or UPS zip codes come into play on rates.... big city Kansas to big city Florida is much cheaper than East podunk Idaho to East Podunk Georgia. (example) . Also not all carriers go to all states. I've found it best to go on same carrier the whole trip versus interlining between carriers. Also insuring something like this is pretty much null and void, depending on carrier and can get very $$$$$$$$$ I would really need much more info to go any further. Hope this helps.

Usually the price of shipping will make an engine deal not a good deal any more. It's a shame , but the truth. If you can get say a '70 340 for $400 but shipping is $350 it basically doubles the purchase price and you don't know what you got till it gets there.

I pack and ship all the time. The 600lbs figure is close. I use tie dons and fully crate them. I've had the crates destroyed but the engine was fine. I use Forward Air. They have depots usually near airports, and you have to drop it off, pay cash or MO, and pick up from there. It's much cheaper. To your door will be the most $$, and someone has to be there when it happens to show up. Also, make sure you insure it! It cost $400 to crate and ship a shortblock from CT to CA. I'd expect about 4-500 bill for a complete longblock going roughly the same distance.
