R12 Freon
« on: December 18, 2006 - 06:15:18 PM »
Digging through the garage, I found some cans of the old "ozone depleting" R12.  Does anyone use this, any market for it?

Thx

Try looking on Ebay. I've seen single cans of it go for over $40.00!!!

they are charging like 87 bucks a pound round here, too bad I had to help a friend at his deli with my last 40 lbs in his rooftop unit a few years back, I used to buy 30 lb cans for 27 & change! Rich.

Rusty,  You wasted your R12, when you should have used R22 in the rooftop unit.

When R12 was going extinct, I bought 2 30lb cans for my mopars.  I still have about 1-3/4 cans left. With good seals and o-rings once charged, the freon has stayed in my Challenger over 20 years.

Yupper, I bought one and my dad bought one. His is still sealed and I have 17lbs. of freon left in mine. Even though I have some I am still thinking of converting my challenger over to r-134 for ease of service. The way I look at it, if I get a rare car with air then it will justify putting the good stuff in.

You can still buy the R12 here, "under the counter" but a 30lb can goes for about $650.

Was hoping this was the case, I've been watching a couple of auctions and it looks like the going price is about $20 a can.  Kinda funny, we used to pay $0.79 for it.  We didn't have A/C gauges, so when car wasn't as cold, just hook up a can for awhile, then throw away whatever was left over.

In case anyone else has some freon they want to sell, I ended up getting $50 for 2 cans.  After the ebay/paypal/shipping fees are taken out it'll be $40.  So $20 a can, not bad.
