Got pulled over today
« on: January 14, 2007 - 05:10:10 PM »
My girlfriend Nikki and I were out driving the cuda today (she was driving) and we pulled into a vista point lookout, and right behind us pulled in a Sheriff in a Dodge Ram. He pulled along side us and when I got out he rolled down his window and said that he really liked the car and we talked for about 5 minutes. He was really cool and it was a nice change of pace, cuz normally when a police officer pulls over to chat it is due to me speeding.

That's cool that he stopped to admire your car. When I bought my car, I had to have a Sheriff's deputy come to my house and inspect the car before I could license it. He loved the car and actually challenged me to a race with his police cruiser. He promised not to give me a ticket. If it hadn't been late winter with snow on the ground I would have taken him up on it.

Some of them can be cool about cars. Back around 1978, I was driving a 73 Cuda. It had a 383 in it, and I put a 2x4 intake on it, but I couldn't get it to run right. One night, when I was at the local motor-head gathering place (A large unused parking lot), I was talking about it with a friend of mine, who was a really good mechanic. He took a look at it for me, made a few adjustments to the linkages, and said "Try it now". Well, the parking lot had two entrances, one on each end, and I didn't want to do anything in the lot because there were people and cars all over the place, so I pulled out onto the road, and floored it. It burned rubber from the one entrance to the other, which was several hundred feet away, where I had to shut it down in order to make it back into the other entrance. When I pulled into the other entrance, I saw the city cop that had been sitting there talking to one of my friends. I pulled over, shut it off, got out, and waited for the inevitable. He walked over to me and said "Runs really good, doesn't it?" I replied "Yeah, I just got it adjusted right". He laughed, and told me to do it outside of city limits from now on, and then went back to talking to my friend. I gained a lot of respect for him that night, because although he could have been a @#$&^# and arrested me, he chose to teach me a lesson in a different way. I never did do another burnout within city limits, ever again.

Here's another "positive pulled over" story. Back around the mid-eighties I was in a city about 30 miles from home to do some shopping. On the way home, and still in that city, I noticed a cruiser behind me. I wasn't sure what he was doing so I made a bunch of unneccessary turns and he stayed with me. After about 20 minutes of that I finally pulled to the side and pretended I was lost. Well he stopped behind me and came up to window. The I asked him if I was doing anything wrong and why he was following me. He said he just really liked the car and liked looking at it. I showed him the engine, and pointed out some of the options. He was mostly impressed that I kept the original radio in it. Talk about getting somebody nervous though. Unfortunately there's more negative stories but that's maybe for another time and thread.

Last time for me was in high school in 1983. I was speeding in my 69 Charger, but as soon as he came to my window, he got an emergency call so he just said "Slow down".
