Fuel Tank Cap Question
« on: December 30, 2006 - 08:39:08 PM »
Can anyone help? :1zhelp:  I have a 71 Challenger with a flip open fuel filler door.  The door has a rubber oring on the inside.  I was told that the rubber oring was designed to seal against the gas fill tube.  I am having trouble believing this as the rubber oring is no where near the lenght it would need to be in order to seal against the fill tube.  My assumption is that I believe there was an actual fill tube cap underneath the flip open fuel door.   Is this correct?  If so, do you have any ideas where I could purchase one?  Thanks in advance for your help!!!

Additional information - the flip open fuel door that I am speaking of below is the chrome flip open cap that says "Fuel" on the outside that you see on a lot of RT's.

Thanks again...

They did originally have a locking cap underneath. No one reproduces the correct ones that I am aware of. Generic locking caps are available, maybe some one that has one on a '71 can post what they use for you.

The caps were just being discussed in the thread http://www.cuda-challenger.com/cc/index.php?topic=28523.0
Rubber "seal" does not seal tank but contacts cap to protect lock I believe.

Thanks guys for the information.   :) I will also check out the thread posted by bullitt99.  Now its a matter of locating a temporary after market cap until I can try to locate an original although I am not sure I want to pay $600.00 for one like I seen on ebay the other night for a 1970 locking gas cap.  :22yikes:

Or you can get a basic cap made by stant, that is what I have under my flip top.  Sorry, I do not remember the number.

Vented of course.
