4 spd 833OD Rebuild
« on: January 07, 2007 - 08:01:49 PM »
How hard is it to rebuild a 4 spd 833OD.
I have never had this tranny in my car, so I would like to overhaul it first.
Does any body know of some web site's which would help.
Or any books / instruction?

How about this rebuild kit, has any body ever purchased from this guy??

looks like a good kit & the price is good too , I get the same kit here for $145 can
the Factroy service manual covers rebuilding them , you need 2 different types of snap ring pliers & some patience but really not too hard to do , , you will need some way to load the countershaft with the 72 needle brgs inside , I have used heater hose in a pinch , Mopar does sell the miller tool or if the counter shaft is worn you can have it cut down to work

Thanks Chryco

Where do you buy your kits from in Canada, I am in Ontario

I believe the trans is from a 86 or 87 Dodge Ram.
Would I need a service manual from the Ram or would the Barracuda manual be the same for the Transmission?
I'm cheap and trying not to buy 2 manuals

Thanks

I get them from King-o-matic
the Cuda service manual covers most of the same thing with rebuilding the 833 , the differences are the cluster gear  shaft has to be dropped into the case then the mainshaft  installed , then the case is inverted & the cluster gear is raised into position & the counter shaft is inserted , on the normal 833 the cluster gear can be completely installed Before the mainshaft

Would you suggest the Chilton's or the Haynes manauls.
I went to canadian tire last night and look at the Haynes manauls and all it says about the truck tranny is to leave it to a mechanic and then show a picture?

Nope Chiltons I have always found to be poorly researched & inaccurate , & Haynes is basic , buy the FSM

I  am asuming that FSM = Factory Service Manual
Do you have to buy this from the dealership or do other companies sell them

Thanks

I bought that kit, nice parts, definitely worth the money, spend 45 bucks on 1 bearing or get 2 in a rebuild kit for 170...cant go wrong.

Finally found a good site for rebuild info:

http://www.slantsix.org/articles/4-speeds/ODA833fourspeed1.htm

This one is good for the Auto to 4 speed conversion:
