Repair hole in floor pan
« on: January 29, 2007 - 10:31:29 AM »
:clueless: How do I repair the hole in the floor pan?  I know the hole was from combination of rust and a jack stand.

Thanks,
Walt

take some measurements and cut out the rusty area weld in a flat piece of steel and then with the measurements you took, just re-drill that drain hole...or buy a new floor pan

Mig welding isn't terribly hard to do but it does take a certain level of skill.  Best way to learn is from someone, if you get your technique down you can make beautiful welds easily.  As far as tools i'd go down to your local welding shop, I go to Airgas Inc. couple blocks from my house, and ask them what they would recommend.  I'm surprised nobody else has posted in this thread?  I bought a Miller, not sure on model, bought it a few years ago, haven't had a lick of trouble with it, done 2 car restos with it.  I'm no expert on body work but I have definitely fixed my share of metal rot

Looks like a relatively easy fix there,, Just go to homedepot or lowes and pick up a piece of sheetmetal 18ga. and before you cut out the bad pece lay the new one in ad form it to fit.  secure it in place with screws or clamp it and cut through both pieces at once.  AS far as welding equipment,, well, depending on your budget you can pick up a lincoln mig in homedepot or lowes, make sure its a gas assisted model,, then off to roberts oxygen or meisser (I think thats how you spell it) or airgas supply,, all 3 of them are around you in DE, MD, SEPA. for a bottle of argon/CO2, a auto darkening helmet, a roll of 24 ga wire some extra tips and nozzels, a regulator or flow meter if the machine you buy doesnt have one with it,, gotta have clamps and vise grips,, unfortunately the list gets longer,,,,,,,OR if thata the only patch you need to make,,, take it somewhere and have someone else do it for you.

Thanks for the info.  I guess I will need to go out and buy these materials.  I know that I will need to use the welder on another project.  My son is working on getting a 65' droptop mustang from his great uncle.  The car has been sitting in a garage for over 25 yrs.

Thanks
Walt
