Opinion Best heads for the money 440

Just want to hear some opinions, not in need of a set just yet.  Most bang for the buck, not the absolute best, hang the cost.  Here's the lowdown on what they'll be used for:

Moderate compression 9:1 or so.  Flat top pistons.
6-Pack carb setup.
Fairly agressive hydro cam ( akita, akita, akita ).
A-833 OD with 3.53  0r 3.91 rear gears.
Lotsa light to light, some highway cruising.

Probably will be changing things around thru the years, so versatility would be a good thing when picking a set of heads.

From everything I've read and heard, the Edelbrock RPMs get you the most bang for your buck. They're great heads right out of the box.

I'm not sure how much they were but when i bought my 440 it came with stock heads redone by Indy.  Not sure if they work well or not, let you know in about 2-3 months lol :thumbsup:

there are so many variables depending what you want out of the engine but I would lean towards the Indy EZ for a mild build & the Indy SR or the Edyy Victor for more serious builds

So what is the budget? I've built some real screamers with cleaned up iron heads that would run around $1200 don. They go up from there. I think at this point, Edelbrock RPMS are cheapest. But the MP Edelbrocks have straight plugs. 9:1 is with open heads you have now. You need to find out where the pistons are in relation to the deck and what head gaskets are in it. Personally, I would do that, and then decide what I wanted to do. The MPs may be cheaper from an exhaust standpoint. You need to provide the one detail that makes it all feasable. How much.

Moper,

Pretty much a hypothetical question,  but the answers will influence my thinking when I build my 440.  Just wondered if Eddy heads were $600 better than Aerohead 906s for $599 or would spending $1200 on a set of iron heads be as much bang for the buck.  That kinda thinking.  Also, should I go with a mild port job or all out high lift flow in case I want to build a different motor down the road, low end torque vs. high winding.

Opinions, everybody has one,

Anything is better than the $599 Aerohead offerings IMO. You get what you pay for in everything. So a set of irons with $600 worth of Indy valve job IMO is not as good as $600 worth of my local shop..Who does much nicer work. Whether heads are right for your build requires me to know what you want from them (power range, compresssion ratio with certian pistons), exh(like some take special headers) plans, current parts you have, and budget. It's easy to get iron heads to make up to 500hp on pump gas. It gets harder beyond that. Some iron heads are more expensive and are not as good for detonation avoidance. IMO, when you combine parts with the costs of good amchine/valve work, you get very close to the cost of the entry level performance heads. (that would be Edelbrock RPM) Within a few hundred anyway. So the next question becomes if you do have the room in the budget, how can the better heads help? Is that worth the few hundred? I have very few times when the answer is "no." I see heads for sale with fresh "valve jobs" for $500. Just the parts for my heads cost more than that total job. There's no way those heads are as good, or IMO even can be classified as "re-done". I recently held a set of $700 327 Chevy heads. They are to be used on a build at the shop. He just paid to have them "done". They replaced the valves, ground single angles on the seats, re-used the retainers and locks, and installed stock springs with umbrella seals. What wasnt done (and still needs to be): replace guides (they knurled them...), install unleaded seats, cut spring seats and guides for performance springs, replace retainers and locks to match new springs, and get 5 angle performance valve job. Now these are a Chevy small block. You can get good performance heads fully assembled for $800/pr. It doesnt make sense to spend $700+$600 to get iron heads work unless rules tell you to use them. Of course, we drive mopars...lol. So you have to double the costs...lol

Thanks for the reply,  That's the kind of discussion I'm after.  I've always kinda leaned toward having a set of iron heads redone, and doing the porting myself ( trying not to go beyond my capabilities ).  But if someone has an opinion as to a better way of going, I'm all ears.  Don't have a real budget, but can't see me spending 2 - 3K on heads.

Keep the comments coming,  what's been a good bang for the buck solution for you ?

Under 2 grand with some mods would probably be Edelbrock RPM'S...but at 9.1 compression I say Iron..
Just how fast you wanna go I guess....

I have a great set of ported/polished 906's 2.14*1.81 manley severe duty valves/ double springs and roller rockers that I beat an 11 second mustang with....but I wanna go faster now so I will probably go to Indy's next...
