I went to Miami Beach High on south Beach, in the late seventies and finished in 82. Pontiac Trans ams, and Z28's were very popular cars at the time. Tha cars I remember that everyone talked about was a 77 Firebird Formula 400cid auto., a 71 440 Roadrunner, a few 78-79 400cid 4spd Trans am's, a 69 454cid Corvette convertible and a 78 4spd. Z28. There where a few Chargers and a couple Challengers and Dusters but they didn't race. I had bought my first car in 10th grade, a 78 400 Trans am auto for $4200 used had it for five years.

I graduated in 72 in a town of 3000. The first really hot car to show up there was a 69 Roadrunner. The kid that had it ended up wrecking it and killing his best friend in the process. Another guy had a 70 roadrunner with a 440 magnum, and a buddy of mine had a 67 Shelby GT500. There was another guy in town that was around 22 yrs old that had a 55 Chevy gasser clone that was supposed to be fast, but I never saw him do anything with it other than cruise. It was sharp and very well done though, show car quality!

One guy had a slingshot dragster so I guess he was the fastest by about 5 seconds in the quarter  :naughty:

Also, one guy that had a pro built '78 Camaro that was real fast
But the fastest was this guy with of all things a 1959 ElCamino!!  454 tunnel ram ect.
He went to Mopar later after high school.   :grinyes:

My '69 GTO had a 2bbl 350 out of a Firebird so I wasn't the fastest that's for sure

...It wasn't me with my slant-six 74 Dodge Dart.  :walkaway:

Mike, we would have made a fine pair!  You know what I drove.  Yep, my 70 something puke green malibu stationwagon.  My girlfriend had a red firebird.  We drove that everywhere when we went out.  When we were going out in a group...I drove.  Could fit 10 people in there! I don't remember any cool cars in our parking lot.  I do remember my music teacher would sometimes let a few of us run errands for her during our class.  We'd jump at the chance to drive her brand new AMC Pacer!   :smilielol: :smilielol: :smilielol:  I always felt like a goldfish in a fish bowl.

My junior and senior years, 75 - 76, it was basically Mike Crittendon. I'd heard about a 69 Mach 1 he drove but that was before i moved down here. After that he had a red, white, and blue Javelin with zoomies that i only saw a handful of times but the one that blew me away was his white 69 Camaro with a 355 small block and 6.13 gears :aarg:
Camaros and Trans Ams were the preferred models but generally most folks had GM followed by some Ford products and a few Mopars. As for my car, i had a 72 Mustang. A week after i got it in 75 i had Hooker Headers, Lakewood Traction Action traction bars, Rocket Racing Wheels, and Kelly Super Chargers installed. For some foggy reason i had the deep dish put on the front and the shallows on the rear :bricks1: ::) I still have the Craig 8-Track but the Kracos and susequent Mind Blowers (my vote for best speaker name) are long gone. Much Skynyrd, Zeppelin, James Gang and Nazareth :ylsuper: :ylsuper: :ylsuper:

I graduated from Miami Palmetto High in 1974, and drove a '72 Gold Duster with THE LEANING TOWER OF POWER!!!  Therefore I was the winner of the slowest car on the lot award.  My friend, however, had a '69 Nova with a 396/375 4-speed car with 4.56 rear end.  Nobody was quicker --- NOBODY.

However, the local yokel who patrolled the back roads we used to race on caught us (he was driving) in his 440 Police Interceptor!  He clocked us at 136 mph and as he was chasing us he came up on us like we were standing still.
