Here's a decent review.  To me it boiled down to:

Lots of eye candy.
Needs a ton of computer to run it even at half it's capability.
$400.00 WTF ?

Pistol Grip is right, it is a lot of eye candy that is not needed right now. I am hearing prices ranging from 300 to 500 for the software plus you will have to upgrade your computer. Sit back and wait, because Bill will be forcing us in that direction though.

That's the headache of it all. All Windows systems are memory and resource hogs and each new release needs more and more and more and.........

And the way they force you into it is to stop supporting the older systems. "Oh you have Windows 2000 - sorry we don't support that any more. XP will be targeted for termination soon."

We installed Vista on a new top of the line machine at work yesterday and while it did look nice.  It seemed to run a little slower than XP.  Before you run out and buy Vista and possibly a new computer, check out what Apple has.  I did about six months ago and I made the switch.  I couldn't be happier.  I even got MS Office for the Mac, and have seen none compatibility issues.  Eye candy and usability debates aside.  my Imac is FAST.  It starts right up, very quickly, and apps are up and running right away.

I got a 20" iMac, 2GB of RAM, 250 GB hard drive, and I doubled the video RAM.  And I bought a wireless 2-button mouse.  If Apple missed anything, it is their mouse.  It stinks.

I concur-don't rush.  In fact, I would actively avoid it at least until the first service pack is release.  Even then, I see no real advantage to it.  Like the others said, it's an INCREDIBLE resource hog, especially if you want all the eye candy turned on.  And, if you want that, you must buy the highest price version out there.  And for what?  So you can have all the headaches of wondering if your current software will work right when you reinstall it?  Nah-they can keep it.  Not needed at all in my book, at least anytime soon.

What's the requirements for vista?

I got 3 gig processor, 650 wat pwr supply, 2 gig ddr3200, 2 raides at 200 2 ide's at 160 gig. But I need to upgrade my video card.  Will that handle vista? My board is a 64bit and I have a 64 bit processor.

Sure, it'll handle it.  My question is why?  Is there any benefit to you spending all that money for the operating system so you can slow your machine down?  (That's almost universally the experience of anyone "upgrading" to vista from a previous operating system-it slows down because it takes so much cpu power and memory just to sit there with a desktop displayed.)

Looking forward to finding out whether there are stable vista drivers written for your hardware yet?  You better hope there are, otherwise you get to deal with the headache of not being able to use some parts of the system.  Same with any software you've installed-you too can be a beta tester for microsoft, and pay for the privilege.

I'm not saying that no one should ever buy vista.  There will come a time when it's inevitable, due partly to XP no longer being supported.  But, that time is not now, and won't come for several years.  Let the majority of the bugs get ironed out, and watch the price gradually drop.  Paying top dollar now for a buggy OS (they're already talking about the 1st service pack) basically amounts to you paying microsoft a premium price to be a beta tester.  I personally can think of much better uses for my money, such as giving it away to random people on the street.  I may end up broke either way, but my computer will still run fine.

I'll be supporting 1400 installations of it pretty soon, guess I should install it on at least one so I can get used to it. :pullinghair:

From the consensus I am hearing so far on Vista, I wonder if sales will be lower than expected.

Bill doesn't seem to worry about the end users response to their changes, nor are they worried about how receptive you are to it. He knows that sooner or later you WILL convert over - You have no choice.
