Old tires

Any ideas on how long tires remain safe? Bought mine in '88 when I got the car, but then it sat until 2004. Tires have never been outside exposed to the sunlight, and don't show any visable cracks or other deterioration. They hold air fine and don't feel like there's any flat spots while driving. Opinions?

I have some old tires that are like brand new out at the barn and I plan on roasting them quickly when I get them installed!
They're like 12 years old I think.

I would think that if they have no visible dry rot, flat spots, cracks, and they hold air, they should be ok. Check carefully though!

Thanks guys. I don't plan on taking any long trips where I might put myself in a position to use the spare, but had some concern over the fronts going KABLOWEE down the 1320 this Spring
I"m getting some drag radial T/As for the rear, but will use what's on it now for around town. Doesn't sound like them going BOOM is anyone's concern~
