Tire size effecting balance???
« on: February 05, 2007 - 08:43:33 PM »
Okay CCC brain-trust.  Here's a question that's a little outside the box.

I have just bought new tires for my 04 QC Ram.  I wanted to upgrade the size and went with Kumho Ecsta STX 305/50-20 on the stock wheels.  They were highly rated, fit fine and look way cool.  Unfortunately, they ride like crap.  At first it was poor balance at 45 mph and up.  Rebalanced not once but twice, including weighting the tire to mimic being on the road.  Still has a rough ride above 70.  The wierd thing is that it comes and goes.  Sometimes it's super smooth, then it feels like I've thrown a weight.  The tire shop says it's because the tires are so heavy and I should go back to the stock size. Is this BS? I looked up the weights and they're 49 lbs. vs 44 lbs. stock.  Doesn't sound like much difference.

I'm trying to determine if I should change tire or size. Is it the shocks? Let me know what you think.  Thanks in advance.

Make sure the tires are round first , IF you can lift one at a time & spin it see if it has a belt separation in it

No such luck with determining what was wrong with the tires.  Nothing visible outside or inside.  I got rid of the Kumho's and got Yokohama Parada Spec-X's in the 305/50-R20 size.  Smooth as silk!  I haven't yet put many miles on them, but I do know that the vibration is completely gone.  I can't say enough about Discount Tire.  The local shop here in Austell, GA took care of me and didn't hesitate to swap the tires.  Always professional and courteous!

Did they find any problems with the Kumho's?  Maybe it was only one tire causing the problem.  I have had that happen before, shook the whole vehicle.

I asked and they said that nothing was visibly wrong.  I assume they looked inside once they got them off.

good choice and no offense to anyone that has kumho's here but there a cheap tire.  Their quailty control is a joke they use a super hard inside compound and then a soft compound. so at first they feel decent then after a while their junk.  And yes discount tire is awsome thats pretty much where i buy all my tires off the net........ :2cents:
