We have talked about a trip to the south west and try to drive as much as we can. Just haven't done it yet.

I've been on several different stretches of it from Kansas through New Mexico. There's a great restaurant in Albuquerque on Central Ave. (old Rt. 66) called The Route 66 Diner.

I would have to look at the map, but I remember driving through Alburquerque ( cause I got a flat there). I drove through 19 states in 18 days, started in North Dakota, over to Michigan, down to Tenn, then over to Nevada and North to Edmonton Alberta. Killer trip and I did it with a 31 foot holiday trailer in tow. Musta burnt 3k worth of diesle...lol

Interstate 40 runs through, around and all over lots of it. It caused a bunch of buisneses to go under for lack of exits in some areas.  Old empty buildings still stand. And there are still lots of sights to see on it. I have gone from Nashville to california taking I-40 and got off on Route66 just to take the slow pace many times.

Things out west I remember about it are
Old buildings, flea markets, diners, indian reservsation stores, dinasoar art, old abandon cars everywhere, and lots of tourist stops with areas of where movies were made and actors pictures forsale.  Before interstate travel, this was a maine route west/east. I really enjoyed seeing everything. I went on a lot of it 4 times last year going back and forth driving home on breaks while working around death valley. Bunches of signs from back in the day are still hanging up.

I live right off of Route 66, at Normal, IL.  Parts of the road follow intertate 55.  There is a route 66 museum in Pontiac, IL and stretch of the original road was turned into a roadside park at Towanda, IL.

Get Michael Wallis' book "Route 66: The Mother Road" - it's the best book on the subject.  Isn't the Route 66 Museum at the Dixie truck stop in McLean, IL?  Also, my mom just got me a 5-DVD set on Route 66, watched 3 discs so far, it's pretty good.  Came in a metal can.

On the way back home to WI after spending several days on the Power Tour, my buddy and I took a portion of Route 66 through Illinois.  Wasn't too enthused about it, at least the part we were on. Right through a city, I forget which one, if you didn't pay attention to the signs you got lost real quick. Found that out the hard way.

I've been on the last original piece of concrete from Route 66 (the Oklahoma section)... it is part of the floor of the transportation exhibit in the now-closed Smithsonian Museum of American History.

Not quite the answer you were looking for, but still counts for something, I guess...
