Brake lines stripped at the proportioning valve
« on: February 11, 2007 - 08:30:21 PM »
My 70 Cuda was originally manual drum brakes all the way around. I upgraded the fronts to disk but ran into a snag.

I was installing a new master cylinder and installing a Summit racing adj. proportioning valve on the front but I tried to remove the lines at the distribution block and they stripped out.  I was using a line wrench and everything.  I guess they were really stuck!  Anyway . Can I just cut the lines a little shorter and reflare them? If that is possible I would prefer to do that rather than drop 180.00 bucks on new lines. One line on going to the front brakes and the front to rear line are messed up. If so where do I get the new ends?

Any suggestions or should I just spring for the kit. The deal is I don't even really need all of the lines...only two of them.

I think you can just buy the two lines that you need.  I would call and ask inline tube or fine lines and see what they say.   :grinyes:

the old tubes may be re-flared , or the steel could be too old & split as you flare it , Make SURE you double flare the ends though

Ditto on what Chryco said about double flaring, and I had the same problem and the parts store had the little screw-in ends.  I don't think the chain places (like Kragens, Pep-Boys, etc) has them, but a decent independent parts house will have the ends. Good luck.

You can buy premade brake lines in 10" incrememnts at most parts stores like Napa and Car Quest. They are straight and will have to be bent to fit your application though.
