A few 440 HP questions
« on: February 10, 2007 - 08:09:03 AM »
I found a nice standard bore '69 440 HP I am thinking about picking up but I need a little info. the motor is out of an auto car and I have a 4spd, will the crank work? since it won't be numbers matching anyway is there any advantage to an HP if you're going to do a full build up ?  and is a $1000 about right?   thanks

Most steel cranks were drilled for the pilot bushing any way so yes the crank will work
the HP designation used the exact same block , only add on parts like cam & manifolds changed

All steel cranks are drilled....4 spd has a 3/4 in hole ,  autos have a 11/16 hole........u can machine a bushing for it, but an easier fix is to go down to your local mopar dealer an get a bearing for a 1994 up truck 318-360, which is a direct fit..........Kim........

Actually up to 1972 were steel, 1973 up cast unless in a manual application, BUT NOT ALWAYS.....Kim.....

The cost seems high to me. Is it running? Carb to pan? water pump and pullies? Or just a long block? Most of the time they go for around 500 bucks or so. Sold as core engines to be rebuilt. But if your area is scarce on BB mopars, and thats a good engine not locked up and bearings spun It may be worth it if you figure the shipping part of buying an engine.

I just looked to see your location....Wasn't any

It's just a long block in peices, I guess if there's nothing special about the HP block or crank there's no sense in paying extra when standard 67-69 440's seem to be everywhere.

Ok I always thought a big block was a big block other than bore and stroke , so is there a way to real fast tell if you're looking at a 440 rather than a 400 or 383? and is there a quick way to tell 915 heads from 906? if not are the casting #'s easy to find? I guess once you've been around them it makes sense but I'm not sure what I'm looking at or for.  thanks

I can't comment on how to identify a 383, or 400. The 440 will have a small flat plate to the right of the distributor hold down clamp. 440 will be stamped into that, if you can see it thru the paint. On my 906 heads, the identifying number was under the valve cover, and plane to see.
