383 questions
« on: February 11, 2007 - 03:53:18 PM »
Hi All

I just have a few questions I'm hoping you can help me with. I have a 68 coronet with a 383 that I'm pretty sure is the orignal engine except it use to be a 2 barrel which I think is what the "G" stood for in the vin number.

1. Does anyone know what the stock compression was on this block

2. I have a set of 516 iron heads that I want to install to raise the compression but will this be to much compression if running 98 octane.

Thanks

Hello,

I really know nothing about these heads. I would think you would have 10:1 compression stock back then. If you have somehow gotten a hold of 98 octane gas, you can go even higher in compression. Just my two cents worth..  :2cents:

Thanks Mike,

I'm in Australia and 98 is the highest we have avalible at the pump. I'm not to sure if the scale is the same between America and us because someone told me once that you guys have better quality fuel.

Cheers

a 2bbl 383 would be closer to 9:1 compression , 516 heads would increase ti to approx 9.8 , I would have the larger 1.72 exhaust valves installed in the heads along with hard seats

Thanks Chryco

Is is possible to put 2.14 and 1.81 valves in this head or are they to big? I will also get the hardend seats installed as well. Is there anything else I need to know about these heads (apart from porting them) that would be handy to know before I take it to the machine shop.

Cheers
Andrew

I usually install the 1.81 exhaust in those heads the 2.14 intake is overkill for a 383 in my opinion

In those heads, you run into serious shrouding issues on a 383 if you go big. Also, if your shop isnt careful, it's easy to hit water (turning the head to junk) when cutting the spot for the hardened seat ring when going 1.81. I generally use 1.74 and 2.08 (stock intake, larger exh) sizes, and I dont install unleaded seats unless it's mandated by the customer.

Isn't it bad for the heads to run unleaded fuel then?

Isn't it bad for the heads to run unleaded fuel then?

If you drive sustained rpms (meaing commute on the highway) or run heavy valve springs, yes. If you are building an engine to go to cruise nights, tool around locally, or drag race. You can go a long way before the valves sink. Because your engine is running slightly rich most of the time and the combustion chamber temps are fairly low. It's long, light throttle situations where the seats will erode from the heat and heavy spings. If you have a set of 516s, and they need guides, and 8 seats, plus new intakes and exh, plus springs, retainers, and locks for the valves, you are less than $400 from a set of Edelbrocks that will way out perform them even with the 516s ported. So I consider the work "budget", and I dont qworry so much about having them last for a lifetime. My 516s on my Cuda's 440 have less than 200 miles on them in 8 years. (Maybe I should Ebay my car with the Hemicuda?? :roflsmiley:) Most seasonal cars around here get maybe 3000 miles a summer. So "cheap" done heads will last for years and years with normal usage. It's all about opinions. I've done both. I'll agree hardened seats are technically "the right way", but truthfully, when the whole picture is taken into account, the "right way" probably doesnt include using 516s.

And you can also use additive to run those heads with normal gas instead of putting hard valve seats. Atleast here in Finland the price for installing the hard seats in machine shop is so expensive that you can get couple sets of used heads for that price. Last time I asked the price for two heads was something like 240 euros which is about 310 usd. With that amount of money you can get additive for about 480 gallons of fuel and even with heavy gas pedal foot and with tire blazing accelerations from every crossing, the fuel would last for pretty long time.

98 octane?why do we have the crappy gas for a fortune in the US?

The octane ratings outside US are different. 98 octane fuel in europe and probably in Australia too is the same stuff which has octane grade of 94-95 in US

Thanks for all the info everyone,

I'm starting to think twice about the hardened seats due to the mileage the car does a year (not much). I will get a quote though and take it from there.

I wish I could afford a set of the eddy's but living in Australia makes them $2600 a set (ouch).

Cheers Andrew
