Build Sheets, When, Where and Why.........
« on: February 25, 2007 - 04:30:43 PM »
This came from a post on our St. Louis Mopar Group.  It was by Jim, a Plant worker here. I think he is retired now but was around during the muscle years.
Rob

"It is important to understand that there was a separate track sheet (broadcast sheet to those who did not work in the plant) for each department and sometimes section such as the instrument panel line. there is not just one sheet. The one behind or under the glove box is the one from the panel line. The one under the carpet is usually the one from the main trim line. The ones from the final line are usually gone. The ones from under the seat
back are from the upholstery line. They were not tucked in the springs. they were laying on the pad when the cover was put on the springs at the build table. When you find one different from your car it will always be the one from the seat trim as these did not have to match the car only the trim color and design and the seats were already made up. Another was used in the chassis and engine lines but these are seldom found. Some, one or none of these may be in the car as when the job was finished they were no longer needed. All sheets have the same information and are identical.  The fender tag (body code plate) was used mainly for the metal and paint shops to know what holes to punch or what metal parts to use. A paper track sheet would not have held up to the heat and chemicals.
There are replica track sheets available but they would not serve any real purpose as the only purpose today is to know parts or options what came on your car. Most of what you need to know is on the fender tag. This is the
big advantage of Mopar over Generic Motors stuff.

Good information Rob. I always wondered why sometimes people find several broadcast sheets in there car. My 72 Duster 340 car had 3 and all were for my Duster. I bought a Challenger back in the early 90's and it had 2 but both were from other Challengers and both were from TA 340 six pack Challengers so now this all makes sense.

I always wondered all of this stuff too.  It was nice to learn something from a guy that was actually there.

There are some exceptions to his statement, like AARs that had T/A broadcast sheets in them and so on, but they were deffinate mistakes.

He is right about the back seat, but the bucket seat sheets were usually tucked into the springs unlike the back seat.
