Is there any difference between a 4-speed and auto console (shape of main body) on a 71 Challenger?  Thanks for any help

Yes. In my 70 I used a automatic console. When you buy the correct top plate you should get a template for cutting the bottom notch for the shifter. When done with the template and the top plate there is no way to tell them apart. I got mine off ebay plate and template together. It also a lot cheaper buying the auto console.

Here are some pics for you Grec. They are the template, and my finished console (ignore the top by the shifter mine was busted). I put tape on the console where I was going to cut it then put the template over it lining up the screw holes and traced it. I used and air body saw and die grinder to cut and smooth it out. But i'm sure the probably a couple of thing that can cut it well. I will try to trace it and send you a copy. Keep in mind you still need the top plate.
