Shifter Mechanism Help
« on: February 08, 2007 - 12:56:09 AM »
Hi guys, haven't posted in a while.  I am converting to a 4 speed and am trying to find a shifter mechanism.  Brewers sells a refurbished one for $99 and if you look closely it says $250 core charge!  I was wondering if anyone has found one cheaper?  Thanks

Depending on what style shifter you have I think you can just go to your local junk yard and get one out of a dodge truck with the A833OD tranny in it. I bought my bellhousing, flywheel, transmission, shifter mechanism, linkages, yokes everything for 175bucks. It uses same style hurst shifter mechanism but you may have to modify your pistol grip (dont' know exactly what needs to be done, but know it can be done..lol. )

Thanks for the help, I emailed Brewers to see what mechanism I could use,  because they all look the same to me.   They told me to check and make sure that there was a 7180 stamped on the reverse lever.   Anyone know?  It seems like there are a lot of these parts on Ebay but I can never tell if it will work for an ebody.

The shifters are different.  The E body shifter does have the 7180 stamped on the reverse lever.  Brewers told me that the lever length and offsets are different.  They were unsure whether a B body shifter would work or not.  I bought a used shifter mechanism off of Ebay for about $125 and it worked fine.

I have used the truck shifter & the new Husrt comp + shifters in E bodys , the offsets of the levers are slightly different but with some minor tweaks the linkage will clear the crossmember & work properly

Thanks for the help guys,  I just don't see how someone can pay 99 for a shifter and another 250 for a core charge.  Hopefully I'll find one soon.

Brewer's rebuilt shifters are expensive, but the craftsmanship behind their work is top knotch.   When I opened the box, I thought it was a brand new shifter. :grinyes: Fortunately I had a B-Body shifter mechanism to use as a partial core for my hurst shifter, so I didn't have to pay the full core charge and cost of the shifter too.

I found a shifter box off of a Chevy on ebay.  No handle, a wierd mounting bracket still bolted to it.  Won it for $45.  Search ebay for "hurst" and start looking for lower arms that look similar to the mopar ones.  I had to bid on at least 5 till I won one cheap.

Thanks for the help guys,  I just bought a shifter handle with a mechanism and the shift rods off of EBAY.  I'm getting closer to completing my swap!
