Yes, but it didn't over-do it. This is the best pic I have on 'puter now.

Mike,
They do look good.  What prepping is required to paint the wheels?  Any sanding or priming, or did you just paint over the color they came in?  If you sanded, what grain did you use?  I may have to order the same stuff.

Thanks!

I didn't get real down and dirty with prepping. I had some rust areas, but I didn't go real fine with the sandpaper. Maybe 200 grit. Then I washed it down and dried it. To be honest, I didn't even use any primer.  :misbehaving:

I waited almost one month for YearOne to ship my wheels(they were on back order). When i got them they had some flaws in the paint,so I thought about sending them back.Instead I ordered five cans of spray paint(what a mess I made). Now I say to myself, why should I have to paint Wheels that are brand new. So,I did two things.I brought the Wheels to a body shop, and told them to paint the wheels as close to the color as they can.I called up Summit, and ordered four more Ralley Wheels.(which they had in stock)I did not have to wait one month. Now I have two sets of wheels.Which ever set looks good,I will put on my car and try and sell the other set.It may be a waste of money, but my headache went away.

My wheels are Year One wheels in Circle Racing Wheels boxes.  They appear to be a color that looks pretty close to the original, but I am told it is just a coating.  I heard that if you do not paint them, they will develop surface rust pretty quickly.  Is this true?

You don't have to buy that expensive Yearone paint or anyones else. Go to Wal Mart and pick up some Krylon Dull Aluminum and you will have a color so close that no one will ever know the differance. That is what is on all of mine.

Rare, your wheels look really great.  I'll probably do the same thing.  Did you sand them first?  How much prep is involved on the wheels?

All I did was take a scuff pad to the good ones. A couple of them had some rust from setting on the ground. For those I blasted them. Then I primed them all and painted them with the Krylon paint. I have 4 with the Polyglas and 4 with the radials. They were painted in the early 90's and still look good, I think anyway. Before you paint the fronts spray the back and inside with Krylon semi-flat black and let the silver overspray through the slots in the wheels for a factory look. If you like the shinny look you can also clear coat them but I believe they were not origionally that shinny. I may be wrong but I have not seen any untouched factory ones that had much of a shine on them.

As long as we are on the subject of rally wheels. For the centers Krylon Fusion paint works great as an alternitive for the expensive argent paint. I was also told recently they also have a lighter Fusion argent but I have not been able to find it yet. Personally I like the dark better as it sets the wheels off better.

I know some will go postal as these products are not OEM stuff. I will never have a Million doller BJ car anyway. I see no need to pay Year One $100.00 for a quart of Argent plus all the shipping they charge when a $4.00 can of Krylon will give the same effect.

Just my :2cents:

I'll give you another tip, a baby food lid is almost the exact size to set on the top of the cone when you paint and if done right you don't even have to mask it.  I taped the outer lip and the center and then blasted the top low pressure, etched and used penstar light  / dark argent (which I used on my grill and shark gill rocker mouldings too).  After just dry pull the tape and the lid and rub the code and lip off with pain thinner.  Holds up great.

Oh, you can get just the center stickers for the top of the cones too.

There is a really nice argent powder now too.  There is a place around here where you can drop off an old rusty rim with/without a tire and get back a nice powder coated rim (two part process, one with a clear powder) for around $60 per rim (used to be $50).
