orange engine paint code
« on: March 20, 2007 - 10:38:41 PM »
I've done some searching on here and have ot found the answer that I am looking for. Does anyone have a Dupont, Nason, or PPG urethane paint code for the correct color of hemi orange paint for a 1970 440 6 pack engine?

I went to advance auto parts and bought duplicolor "Chrysler engine orange" in a rattle can.  Can't get more descriptive than that

I have tried virtually every rattle can out on the market and am unhappy with all results thus far. I am giving up on rattle cans and want to use my spray guns instead. I'm going to have the engine stripped and boiled out. Then I am going to spray the entire engine with an epoxy primer, and finish off with a urethane paint. BUt I do not have the paint code for the proper color.

Nostalgia Lane shared this with me:  PPG DCC 60626

But the local distributor couldn't mix it up so I bought it from them and the kicker here is that they went out of their way to also provide me with the formula for a full quart:

DMC 920    223.4
DMC 906    376.7
DMC 902    387.3
DMC 909    733.3
DMC 907   1368.9

This is a single stage paint and it's nice and thick enough that you can easily do touch ups with a brush out of the can.

Primer:

DP50LF - Non Sanding Epoxy Primer Light Grey
DP401LF - Epoxy Primer Catalyst

DP40 or DP50 is what they recommended for the base at that time of the year.

I bought everything I needed to do two motors (besides the DP40) from NS for about $170 - more than I thought but they were good to work with and probably would help you out if needed.  So, that mixture will probably be twice what you need so that should help save some money.

Low quality picture attached (I'll try to email you a better one) but can be used for a color reference.

Good luck finding a better orange - Galen lists two different ones just in 70 (one for the Hemi Street Hemi Orange and Hemi orange for the other orange motors) and earlier there was race hemi orange too and that's just confounds the problem of finding "hemi orange".

This color may be a bit washed out / bright (sounds contradictory) but that's what I went with but  haven't seen it in the sun yet except on a hemi car and it looked great and has held up.

Skip the rattle can and Por-15 (first drop of antifreeze stains their hemi orange and I learned that the hard way and got a refund).

Good luck!

70Cuda:  Thank you VERY much for sharing that information - Your engine looks great.  :2thumbs:

This subject was tossed around on moparts.com a while back, and the consensus seemed to be that it was PPG code 5067U.  Any idea of the difference in DCC60626 and 5067U?  (That's about as confusing as the 'Street Hemi Orange' and 'Restoration Hemi Orange' that are sold by MP).

Did you use single stage urethane, or a 2-stage paint with flattener in the clear?

This is an interesting topic, and there are a lot of us wondering about this!

Thank you,
Tom

Hope it helps and thank Nostalgia Lane.

I added to my original post, it's a single stage paint and I'm not a paint guy so I really can't speak to the difference but if someone wants to run with this topic and get info from PPG - be my quest.

You could link us to the other topic too.

OK.  I haven't been around here for too long, and I didn't know if linking to other boards is acceptable.

There are a bunch of threads about it at moparts.com, but this seems to be the most informative:

I'm not a paint guy, either.  But, just like my exterior paint, I will certainly share whatever I learn!  :D

Thanks again,
Tom

Please keep in mind that engine colors and body colors on Hemi Orange are different and almost anything you find in a paint color called Hemi Orange will be for the body color.

Looks great though.

That is exactly my concern, and why I find this subject interesting.  Since my car is Hemi Orange, I want to make sure that the engine paint is visibly different than the car, and also correct for what was used in 1970.

Everytime I try to research the correct color for the engine 'Hemi Orange', I end up getting codes for the body (EV2).  So far, the mixture you used (DCC60626) and the one shown on the other board (5067U) look about right.  I would welcome hearing anyone's experiences with this!

In the past I have used rattle cans for the color, and spray clear imron (DuPont polyurathane) over it.

FYI I just got a couple of ounces for test spraying of the Dupont 5067U, and it is EV2 body color. Not I repeat not engine color. The PPG 60626 looks right, I don't have anything to compare it to other than incorrect colors, but it looks good.
