What do you think ???
« on: March 25, 2007 - 02:54:12 PM »
I have been into and following NHRA racing since the late 60's. How many of you feel who follow the sport that we are nearing  the peak of safty-performance . Blaine Johnson--Darrell Russell-Dale Earnhart--now Eric Medlin. Very sad days in the history of racing. I have to wonder if maybe we have reached the peak of performance and safety. They can build all the saftey equipment in a car but the simple fact remains we are a fragile life force. Eric died of a closed head injury same as Dale Earnhart. You have 7000 HP pushing you over 300 mph and all that power and speed come to a dead stop INSTANTLY like hitting a concreate wall your car may stop and your external body may stop because of saftey straps but all your internal organs including your brain are still going 300 mph until it hits the inside of your skull. There will never be saftey equipment to prevent that. I also have to wonder how this will effect John Force Racing ? Will he be to scared to let his own daughter continue ?? It has to play on his mind even though he is a seasoned champion. Ashley herself has to have alot of her own demons being her first year driving a funny car and now to see what can happen in an instant to someone who was close to her. So as long as we keep chasing the speed god brave souls like the race car drivers will be in harms way. I remember a few years back they were interviewing racers about the speed of cars then. They were going like 285-290 mph and they asked Don Garlits ( I believe) what would it take to hit 300 mph and he said the car would have to be 3 inches longer, 3 inches lower and SOMEBODY ELSE TO DRIVE THEM !!
Just wondering if anybody else was thinking the same thing.

My summary...John will keep letting his daughters drive, There is a risk in every sport, even with all safety factors applied. Even driving a normal car your at risk. I don't think we will quit finding new and better ways to protect ourselves, but the sports and quest to be first will always push us forward.  A 13 second car will kill you. When your time is up, it's up.

As bad as it is when a driver gets killed, it isn't near as bad as it was back in the good old days.  Minimal if any roll protection, helmets optional, zero fire protection, etc.......   The safety systems have gotten much better and the speeds have increased along with them.  I understand your question, but I don't know when the next gen of safety equipment will come along in race cars and remedy that brain de-cel problems.  Could be as simple as mandatory air bags in conjunction with all the other saftey equipment..   Good question...

We have certainly not reached the performance level of these cars.  They, NHRA and NASCAR have gone to great lengths to slow the cars down.  NHRA has reduced the amount of nitro you are allowed to run from 95% to 90% to 80%, and will continue to do so to keep speeds down what they consider a safe level.  Their belief is that the tires cannot take those high speeds and rotation, and still hold together. So they limit the nitro to slow the cars down.  However, the crew chiefs have shown that they have the ability and knowledge, to make the speeds and elapsed times as quick as and quicker than when they were running 95% nitro.  Funny Cars and Top Fuel Dragsters are still running 330 miles an hour and as quick as 4.43 seconds in the quarter mile. Will we ever see a sub-four second run?  I for one do not believe we will, not because the cars cannot go that fast, but the powers that be will keep them from going those speeds.  Safety equipment continues to evolve every year. Head and neck restraints are continuing to evolve, as does the design of the cars.

As long as there are people who are willing to push the envelope, and we have drivers willing to risk their life to drive these cars, we will continue to see advancement in both safety and speeds.

Well nothing we do on this planet really makes a difference in 100 years time , the only loss we really have is our own familys
so given the choice of taking 3 years to die of curable cancer in horrendous pain like my dad or dying in seconds decelerating from 300+MPH & seeing as I only have my mom left I think you know what I would choose , I will volunteer to run 350 MPH & 100% nitro at under 4 seconds Please , maybe I f I can make enough $$ I will prove that my Charger can run over 250 MPH yet
