I've got a 73 barracuda w/ a 318 and a 904 trans. Right now, I've got a bit of a shifter problem... I can take it into reverse and neutral no problem, but the shift from neutral to drive is tricky, because the shifter easily misses drive and hits 2nd gear. In addition, I can't hit 1st gear at all. Is this just a linkage problem, or do I have a problem with the tranny (maybe the valve body)? Could it be the shifter itself? The lockout feature works partially, but can be manipuatled to shift through the gears without pushing the button. Obviously, I want the get this fixed so I can actually use the slapstick the way it is meant to be used! By the way- when I do get this fixed, at what rpm should I be shifting? - A guy w/ a 440 told me he shifts at 5,500 rpm. Does this hold true for the 318 as well? Also, the trans pan is leaking, which I will replace the gasket and filter- anything else I should look at/ for while I am under there? One final question- what are your opinions about shifter kits?- I've heard that there are pros and cons to using them...
Thanks,
Rick
