Need info on 833 18-spline 4 speed
« on: October 16, 2003 - 09:20:47 PM »
I am thinking about buying a 833 4 speed(18 spline) for my 73 Challenger, to put behind my 340 motor. I was wondering if anyone would know what kind of 833  this is, I have located the following #'s: WS23L9A112340. I was told it is a Hemi trans, how do you prove that it is? How rare are they? How much is it worth?
Thanks for your time
Any input would be appreciated

i think only the hemi and the 440-6 cars had the 18 spline trans.

i'm kind of looking for one myself..which ever trans i find first is what i'll do auto or man.

Thanks for the info!
One more question.....will the 833 18-spline bolt up to my 340 motor? I was told the 18-spline only came with the 440 or the hemi motors, what do I have to change to make it work with the 340 motor?
Thanks

i don't think it can be done cause this will through the starter off and could have clearence problems

you'll need a 11" flywheel cause the 18 spline clutch is a 11"

you might have a clearence problem with the flywheel  to bellhousing. not sure but maybe a blowproof bellhousing like from lakewood would be bigger on the inside and might clear..then by making the flywheel bigger it will make the starter off .

cause the 340's are 10" clutch with 23 spline.

you can use the 10.9" 18 spline disc with the flywheel you have you also need a larger release brg , other than that i twill bolt in, as for what it is worth probably around $1500 , & it is  definatly OVERKILL for a 340 !!!

 CP,

While were on the subject of 833's and 340's, I need to replace my cluth assy and need something that bullet proof and will last longer than six months. What should I go with? Who do I order them from? Part numbers?

 Thanx

The best clutches I have found are the Borg & Beck or th Borg & Beck Long style made by McLeod , with a Velvet touch / Feramic disc , they can be built with different spring rates by changing the springs & some have the cenrifugal weights for more load with increased RPM .
I ran a B&B in my Duster & pulled the front wheels for years with it & when I pulled the disc out it was B5 Blue in color but the 6 pucks were not fully seated in & it had no significant wear , the previous clutch was a metallic organic disc & it wore out it 500 miles

1973ChallengerHW:

I'm wondering about your question regarding how to prove if it's a Hemi trans.  Do you mean how do you visually ID the trans?  If that's your question, than the easy answer is the input shaft has 18 splines (versus 23 for the more common 833).  But if you are questioning if the trans came from an actual Hemi car, you would have to match the trans serial number stamping to the VIN from the car it came from (which might be almost impossible).

I want to address one more of your questions.  You have to make sure your crank hub is reamed out to accept the manual trans input shaft.  (Forgive me if all 340's are reamed for manual trans set-ups, I'm not that familiar with small blocks).

All the steel cranks seem to be cut for the pilot bushing , if it is not cut you can get around it by using the Dakota brg , part # 53009180-AB assumong there is some hole in the back of the crank to clear the input shaft
