Caulking for roof/rain rails
« on: April 03, 2007 - 07:02:37 AM »
What type of caulking goes on the roof rails ? I am talking about the rain gutter that is part of the top of the window opening.
(not the screw on external trim)

Mine looked cracked and shrinked and I am removing it.
  :working:

thanks
Ben

I believe that it is the same body caulk that is used for all the other seams on the car.

i have seen 2 types of body sealant on the cars. One is a foamy type that has air bubbles and one is a solid white caulk.

It should be the solid white stuff.

What Ted said..

I use 3M general aut body sealer, in a tube. It gets applied with the caulk gun, and then smoothed in with your finger tip.

There are a few different types of seam sealer-some you brush on some uase a caulking gun.The better stuff is urethane and won`t shrink like the old stuff.

Don't know what was used under the roof rail but I discovered that some of the sealant is exactly like rope caulk found at hardware stores. About 1/8" round white never gets hard. Deffenantly used to seal the plastic inner door.

It seems it is either rusted or looks like brand new steel, either way the white stuff is a PITA to get off.  :stomp:
