Cluster restorations, what did you pay and have done?
« on: April 04, 2007 - 01:25:02 PM »
Trying to get an idea on what people are paying to compare with a quote for this one.  This one was going to get a full resto, but I was pretty shocked at the price... so weighing options.  I'd think at this price someone could repop them for alot less and get rich!

Hi, Mike from Instrument Specialties, here, do you mind if I ask what the quote price was? What exactly is the company doing to your cluster? I'll tell you if it's out of line or not.

Thanks
Mike

Paying a grand to have the gauges fully restored is not out of line. There are a couple of companies I talked to that can do it for less, but not much. There is a lot of work that goes into restoring the gauges and making them correct again. I know there is at least one company that is charging a lot more than that, and they are out of their minds. Who did you get your quote from?

There are variables here. If you just need refacing and needles painted, that's one thing. If you need the tach and clock rebuilt(common), that's alot more. Do you need a dead oil/temp/gas gauge fixed, that adds more. Blown up speedo... you see my point here. This could be anywhere from $500-$1500. For what it's worth, this is who I used.

I just re-read your question. I'll catch on here eventually.  :banghead:

The link in my above is where I sent my gauges. My speedo was blown up. My oil pressure gauge had gone to heaven. The clock probably hadn't worked in over 30 years. I needed a new reset cable, and the needles repainted. Other than that, the faces looked good. Total cost was $700+, but this was 3.5 years ago.

Im just trying to get an idea whats a fair price having never been through having a cluster restored.  Looking at closer to 2k, to me that seems like alot, but maybe thats the norm... thanks for the info mek, this one would be getting alot more, so maybe its a good price.

72hemi, I pm'd you, thanks

That's possible. You also have to factor in the quality of their work. It would be nice to have some positive feedback from someone that has used whatever place you decide to go with.

Here are some pics of mine. http://www.cuda-challenger.com/cc/index.php?topic=22576.0

I sent mine off to Redline gauge works http://www.redlinegaugeworks.com/

Full repair of every gauge in the cluster, all new internals in the speedo, clock & tach. clock repair (broken reset knob). They repainted everything, including the numbers in the odometer & trip odo, which were all but gone. converted amp gauge to voltmeter. That is the same plastic cover, before & after, they polished that up also.

total cost: $1150.21. turn around time for me was 2 months. sent it in just about 1 year ago

All I had to do was document the odo reset with DMV. (didn't matter anyway, car was sold to me "as-is" 1,000,000 miles with a different motor & trans from stock, so I only sent the letter in to cover may butt if I ever have to sell it.)

If you want any other pics shoot me a message, Oh & the only pieces still fuctioning at all were the speedo & the odometer, just to compare condition to cost if its necessary.

Here is a shop in Martinsville, Va.  http://www.autoinstruments.com/mopar.htm

Average price for complete cluster...about $675.   They are also in the process of rebuilding a Challenger themselves.!!

Looks like Im going with auto instruments, seem to have good prices and do good work.  Its going in a car thats not going to be 100% correct, but the guages looked bad!
