Dist. wear
« on: April 15, 2007 - 01:44:56 PM »
Just wondering how to repair the slop in the distributor shaft.  Its got quite a bit of wear.  Pretty sure its part of the cars hesitation problem.   Are there bushings in the top and bottom?  Ive never had one apart.  Will the shaft be wore at all, or do the bushings mostly wear?  Its on a '71 383.  Thanks

the bushings are bronze so the shaft will be ok , there are 2 bushings , one near the top & bottom of the housing

not very difficult , you need to undo the vacuum advance & aadvance plate [ 4 screws ] & drive the roll pin out of the lower shaft & slide off the nylon ring that limits upward travel of the shaft , & remove the small circlip inside the top shaft , there is a small piece of jute like material in the top of the shaft & the circlip is under that , then you will have a bare housing & can get to the the bushings

I have worked on one also, and I agree with Chryco, it is not very hard, just be careful you get everything back together correctly.  Time wise, it really depends on how good you are with taking things apart.  Even if you are real slow, you should be able to do in an afternoon.  Good Luck.   :2thumbs:

Perfect.   :2thumbs:

Thanks guys.  I hope this helps my hesitation/rough idle problem.  I should be able to do that in about an hour.  I've taken a thing apart, or two...

Ok, so I called the dealer.  He said that he couldnt find it in the book.  ( I think he's a Chevy guy, not kidding)  He said he found this in the performance catalog though:

Is that right?  Do I need two?  Now I'm really confused.   :1zhelp:
