How hard is it to put on a vinyl roof?
« on: April 27, 2007 - 10:11:47 AM »
I'm trying to plan a budget for my 73 Cuda project. I'm not a big vinyl roof fan, so it may be one of the things that gets eliminated. My options are: 1. leave it off,  2. Do it myself,   3. Have someone do it for me.

Anyone want to offer advice?
1. If I leave it off, how much would it affect the value of the car if I ever wanted to sell it?
2. If I do it myself, is it hard to do?
3. If someone else does it, what would be a good estimate for the cost of having it done if I buy the material?

Hey it is not that hard to put a vinyl top on.  I have installed several and the best thing to do is to get it and have it good and warm.  Then put it on the top without any glue to find the center of the top and see how it works.  Just mark everything as you go and it will be fine.  If you have any questions you can pm me and I will see if I can help more.  I like the vinyl tops myself and I am going to put mine back on when I get to that point.   :)
Got a pretty good start on my M46 optioned Barracuda restoration but now it is on hold till I can gather more funds.  Still need a few parts for it.  SIU Graduate 75 AAS Automotive Tech, 94 BS Advanced Tech Studies, 1997 MSED Workforce Education and Development

I just put one on a charger this week. It not that hard, like 426 hemi said mark your centers, take off every thing because if the glue gets on the paint :swear:. After the initial fit fold it in half on the roof and the corresponding side of the vinyl roof. Spray one side then from the middle work your way out. It helps with 2 guys but only one works it or you get wrinkles. Post any other questions the best I can say is if you screw it up its only a $150.00 mistake.

I like vinyl tops and have put on a few. I usually remove the old one , chrome trim and clips, and repair /repaint underneath. Now with my repo top in hand my local trim shop will install it for  75 bucks. And that is with me putting all the trim back on. Now the job is not hard and can be quite rewarding, BUT, the glue usually cost at least 10 bucks a can and it takes me 4 cans. SOOOOOOO......for only 35 bucks more they can do it in about 35 minutes..........choice is yours............J
